New York, NY – AHL Foundation is pleased to present “Dear D,” an exhibition featuring the works of four artists who explore how desire can be used as a tool to engage with the world. The exhibition will be on view from May 6 – May 20, 2023, at the AHL Foundation Gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., New York, NY 10030). 

“Dear D,” showcases the works of Austin Li Chang, Enzo Lee, Chucky Kim x Nak, and Jean Oh, who come from different backgrounds and use various mediums such as painting, video, and music to convey their personal experiences with desire. Diasporic and immigrant desires reveal the inner worlds of marginalized bodies and minds that negotiate their futures.

“Dear D – we write a letter to our desires. We make art not to passively meet our desires but to seek them out. “This letter is sent perpetually to a destination named desire,” said Jiyoung Lee, Director of Programs and curator.

Austin Li Chang intimately renders portraits of his family and friends, reflecting what may appear as innately human as the potential for understanding and desire. Enzo Lee expresses his own voice and desires through his journals, essays, poems, and large paintings. Chucky Kim x Nak explores sound and its relationship with material objects such as speakers, blending frequencies and merging the spiritual and physical. Jean Oh draws memories, observations, feelings, and identities from ordinary objects rooted in personal experiences. Oh’s process is informed by personal stories and the desire to express the paradoxical nature of human beings.

From paintings, videos, and music, the medium employed in this exhibition responds to the transformative and intimate power of desire. We hope to spark conversations about the complex relationships between desire, identity, and artistic practice through the work of Austin Li Chang, Enzo Lee, Chuck Kim x Nak, and Jean Oh.

About Artists

Austin Li Chang is a Taiwanese American artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He primarily works with acrylic, oil paint, and photography mediums to depict his personal experience with the East Asian diaspora. He was raised in Houston, Taichung, and Vancouver.

 

ENZO PIECE OF LIFE SERIES, 2022, Video

 

Enzo Lee is a Korean journal artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Enzo first started his journey as an artist by carrying a journal during his teenage years. Uncertain of the future, he started to write down his feelings, thoughts, and experiences to study himself, hoping to gain control over his life. Over time, the habit naturally evolved into something more and became not only a form of recording but also a form of expression. His own voice, the art. Enzo published his first book of essays and poems, “Bird in Space”, in 2014. Realizing that the voice shouldn’t be limited by any specific medium, he went on to study filmmaking to learn multi-dimensional aspects of art. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Filmmaking from School of Visual Arts, and works on a permanent video journal series called “Piece of Life”. Currently there are about 140 episodes online. Since 2020 COVID, Enzo also started to explore the medium of painting and is now expressing journals through large paintings. Enzo is pursuing to develop his philosophy and artistry of using a journal as a tool to live life itself as a form of art, the “Piece of Enzo”.

Chucky Kim x Nak 

Chucky Kim is a music producer, technologist, and educator. He has Billboard-charting hits with artists such as Jay Park, Taeyang, Kai, Babyface, and Mary Lambert. Currently, he is the Head of Music Experience at Artiphon, designing new interactive instruments and experiences, in addition to serving as faculty at Columbia University, the Juilliard School, and researcher at the MIT Media Lab. Most importantly, he is a dog dad to the cutest two rescue pups in the world, Oliver and Annie. 

Nak Whether he’s playing big rooms or selecting at intimate venues, Nak (mdnghtdiningclub) connects with the crowd. The New York-based DJ/producer’s taste and curiosity for all styles of music combine with his positive energy on the dancefloor, and his fun, effortless sets always keep people moving. Nak also designs and builds home speakers and large-format sound systems — his intention is to explore and share immersive audio experiences with likeminded individuals and the community alike.

Jean Oh is a New York-based artist who holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Pratt Institute. Oh is the recipient of the Silver Award for AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards. Oh’s solo exhibitions include Nars Foundation and Iron Velvet Gallery in New York, as well as in group shows such as Transitions (NeueHouse Madison Square, 2021) and Something from Nothing Art (Space 776 Gallery, 2020)

 

Curator Bio

Jiyoung Lee is the current Director of Programs at AHL Foundation. Her previous experience includes work as an online communications manager at the Asia Culture Center, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as an internship at Queens Museum. During her career, Jiyoung has organized a range of exhibitions and programs, including AHL Foundation’s Award Recipients Exhibitions and its annual Gala, Art in the Workplace exhibitions at Bank of Hope, and ACC International Round Table (2017-2019). She has also managed AHL Foundation’s AKAA project (Archive of Korean Artists in America), where she updated its interface, developed an archival manual, and led AKAA research fellows’ projects. Jiyoung graduated from Pratt Institute (2021) with a Master’s degree in Museums and Digital Culture.

비영리 한인 예술 지원 단체 알재단 (대표 이숙녀)이 오는 5월 6일(토)부터 5월 20일(토)까지 알재단 갤러리 (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., New York, NY 10030)에서 전시 ‘Dear D,(디어 디, :욕망에게)’를 개최한다. 이지영 알재단 프로그램 디렉터가 직접 기획 한 이번 전시는 5월 아시아 태평양계 유산의달(Asian American and Pacific Islander(AAPI) Heritage Month)을 맞이하여 한국 및 대만계 미국인으로 구성 된 회화, 영상 및 뮤지션 5인을 한자리에 모았다. 참여 작가는 오스틴 리 창(Austin Li Chang), 엔조 리(Enzo Lee), 2인 1조로 처키 킴 x 낙(Chuck Kim x Nak)과 오진이(Jean Oh)이며, 전시는 각기 다른 분야에서 활동하는 네 명의 아티스트가 세상과 소통하는 도구로 욕망(Desire)이 어떻게 활용될 수 있는지 탐구하고자 한다. 

이번 전시는 오스틴 리 창과 오진이의 구상 및 추상 회화, 비디오 저널리스트로서 일상을 기록하는 엔조리의 영상, 작곡가 처키 킴과 DJ 및 스피커 제작자로 활동하는 낙의 협업 제작 음악에 이르기까지 욕망의 변화무쌍하고 내밀한 힘에 대응하는 다양한 매체를 선보 일 예정이다.

참여 작가 오스틴 리 창은 가족과 친구들의 초상화를 통해 이해와 욕망을 품은 인간 본성을 그리고 있다. 엔조 리는 일기, 에세이, 시, 대형 회화 등 다양한 매체를 통해 자신의 예술세계와 목소리를 표현한다. 처키 김×낙은 소리와 스피커라는 물질적 대상과의 보이지 않는 음악의 관계를 탐구하며 정신과 육체를 통합하는 사운드 설치 작업을 전개한다. 오진이는 캔버스를 통해 개인적인 경험에 뿌리를 둔 평범한 사물에서 기억, 관찰, 감정, 정체성을 찾고자 하는 열망을 보여준다.

한편 본 전시를 기획한 이지영 프로그램 디렉터는 “전시 제목 디어 디, 가 암시하듯 ‘욕망’이라는 수취인에게 무한으로 보내는 편지가 실재한다면 어떤 모습일지 상상할 수 있는 전시가 될 것이다. 특히 짧은 블로그 형식의 영상 작업과 스피커를 재단 갤러리에서 전시하는 것은 처음으로, 다채로운 매체와 작업을 통해 많은 관람객이 욕망, 정체성, 예술적 실천 사이의 복잡한 관계에 대해 탐구 할 수 있는 즐거운 시간이 될 것” 라고 전시 기획 의도를 밝혔다.

오스틴 리 창(Austin Li Chang)

오스틴 리 창은  휴스턴, 타이중, 밴쿠버에서 성장했으며 현재는 뉴욕 브루클린에 거주하며 작업하는 대만계 미국인 작가이다. 주로 아크릴, 유화, 사진 매체를 사용하여 동아시아 디아스포라에 대한 개인적인 경험을 묘사하는 작업을 하고 있다.

엔조 리(Enzo Lee)

엔조 리는 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 한국계 저널-아티스트이다. 엔조는 십대 시절 부터 일기장을 들고 다니며 예술가로서 커리어를 시작했다고 회상한다. 불확실한 미래를 생각하며, 그는 자신의 삶을 통제하고 주도권을 갖기 위해 자연스럽게 자신의 감정, 생각, 경험을 적으며 자신에 대하여 연구하기 시작했다. 2014년 첫 에세이 및 시집 ‘Bird in Space(날라리 자서전)’ 을 출간했으며, 이후 목소리가 특정 매체에 국한되어서는 안 된다는 생각에 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트 (School of Visual Arts)에서 필름 제작을 전공하는 데 이르렀다. 지속적으로 자신의 삶을 테마로 ‘삶의 조각(Piece of Life)’ 시리즈 영상을 제작하고 있으며 현재 약 140개 이상의 에피소드를 제작했다.  2020년부터 작가는 매일의 노트와 일기를 표현하는 대형 회화 작업을 진행하고 있으며, 일기를 삶의 도구로 사용하는 철학과 예술성을 발전시켜 일기 자체를 예술의 한 형태인 ‘엔조의 조작(Piece of Enzo)’로 만들고자 시도 중 이다.

처키 킴 x 낙(Chuck Kim x Nak)

처키 김은 음악 프로듀서이자 테크놀러지스트, 교육자입니다. 처키는 제이 팍(Jay Pakr), 태양(Taeyang), 카이(Kai), 베이비페이스(Babyface), 메리 램버트(Mary Lambert) 등 유수 아티스트와 함께 작업한 바 있으며, 빌보드 차트에 오른 히트곡을 제작했다. 현재 아티폰(Artiphon)의 뮤직 경험 부서의 총괄 디렉터 로서 새로운 인터랙티브 악기와 유저 경험을 디자인하고 있으며, 컬럼비아 대학교와 줄리어드 스쿨의 교수이자, MIT 미디어 랩의 연구원으로도 활약하고 있다. 무엇보다도 그는 세상에서 가장 귀여운 강아지 두마리, 올리버와 애니의 아빠이기도 하다.

낙(mdnghtdiningclub)은 뉴욕에서 활동하는 DJ 겸 프로듀서로서 큰 공연장에서 연주하든 친밀한 장소에서 선곡하든, 관중과 소통하는 것을 중요시한다. 그는 모든 스타일의 음악에 대한 취향과 호기심, 특유의 긍정적인 에너지와 즐겁고, 친근한 음악으로 사람들이 자유롭게 춤 출 수 있는 무대를 창조하는 작가이다. 또한 낙은 홈 스피커와 대형 사운드 시스템을 설계하고 제작하고 있으며 같은 지향점을 가진 개인 및 커뮤니티와 함께 몰입형 오디오 경험을 탐구하고 공유하는 데 관심을 두고 작업 하고 있다.

오진이(Jean Oh)

뉴욕에서 활동하는 아티스트인 오진이(Jean Oh)는 메릴랜드 인스티튜트 예술대학에서 학사를, 프랫 인스티튜트에서 석사 학위를 취득했다. 그는 2019년 AHL-T&W 재단 현대 시각예술상 은상을 수상한 바 있으며, 뉴욕의 나스 재단(Nars Foundation) 및 아이언 벨벳 갤러리(Iron Velvet Gallery) 에서 개인전을 열었다. 또한 트랜지션스(노이에하우스 매디슨 스퀘어, 2021), 썸씽 프롬 낫띵 아트(스페이스 776 갤러리, 2020) 등의 다수의 그룹전에 참가한 바 있다.

기획자 소개  이지영은 현재 AHL 재단 프로그램 디렉터로, 이전에는 문화체육관광부 국립아시아문화전당 홍보팀에서 온라인 커뮤니케이션 매니저로 일했으며, 퀸즈 박물관에서 인턴십을 했다. 그는 알재단에서 현대미술상, 펠로우십 수상작가 전시회와 연례 갈라, 뱅크 오브 호프의 아트 인 더 워크플레이스 전시회를 진행하고 있으며, ACC 인터내셔널 라운드 테이블(2017~2019) 등 다양한 전시회와 커뮤니티 기반 프로그램을 기획한 바 있다. 또한 알재단의 장기 프로젝트인 AKAA 프로젝트(미주 한인 예술가 아카이브)를 관리하며 인터페이스를 업데이트하고 아카이브 매뉴얼 개발 또한 이끌고 있다. 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트에서 박물관 및 디지털 문화 전공으로 석사 학위(M.S.)를 취득했습니다.
