New York, NY – AHL Foundation is pleased to present Predicament Room, a solo exhibition of new works by New York-based Korean artist Hong Seon Jang, who received the 2023 AHL-AAW Solo Exhibition Grant. Curated by Young Min Moon, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the exhibition will be on view from September 9th to September 29th, 2023, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 9th from 3-6 PM.
Predicament Room grapples with the complexities and conflicts of Asian American identity through a series of evocative installations, sculptures, and objects. Drawing on his experiences growing up in militarized South Korea and the pressures faced as an immigrant in America, Jang gives artistic form to indignities, resentments, and ambivalences often suppressed in Asian American life. Works such as Change, My America, and Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon challenge expectations placed on Asian Americans while exploring notions of authenticity of cultural identity and model minority stereotypes in the racial hierarchy of American society.
“Hong Seon Jang’s immigrant aesthetic is that of resistance. Engaging with the legacy of conceptual art for critical ends, he refuses to remain silent and offers both concrete and emblematic intervention toward more democratic futures. The point is not to merely dwell in Asian victimhood but to seek solidarity among the oppressed and to fight for a more equitable country,” writes Young Min Moon.
Hong Seon Jang received his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, NY, and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME. AHL – AAW (Asian Art Works, Inc, founded by Cristal Kim) Solo Exhibition Grant
established in 2023 to provide mid-career Korean artists actively working in the U.S. with opportunities for solo exhibitions and to promote outstanding contemporary Korean art to the wider community. Asian Art Works (AAW, Inc) was founded by Cristal Kim in New York in 2006 with the mission to introduce and promote Asian contemporary art and culture in the international art world.

비영리 한인 미술 지원 단체 알재단(대표 이숙녀)은 오는 9월 9일(토) AHL – AAW (Asian Art Works, Inc, ) 기금 수상전으로 《Predicament Room》를 개최한다. 매사추세츠 애머스트 대학 미술학과 문영민 교수가 기획하였으며, 9월 9일 토요일 오후 3-6시에 오프닝 리셉션 및 아티스트 토크가 열릴 예정이다.
전시 《Predicament Room》은 작가가 군사정권 시대 한국에서의 성장기와 미국에서 이민자로서의 삶에서 겪었던 압박의 경험을 바탕으로, 설치와 조각, 오브제를 통해 아시아계 미국인이 흔히 억눌러야 하는 모욕, 분개, 감정의 교차 등 정체성의 복잡성과 갈등을 다룬다. 본 전시에서 선보이는 작품 《Change》, 《My America》, 《Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon》은 미국 사회의 인종적 위계질서의 맥락에서 아시아계 미국인에 대한 사회적인 기대와 동시에 문화적 정체의 진정성과 모범적인 소수민족이라는 고정관념에 의문을 던진다.
문영민 교수는 전시 서문에서 “장홍선의 ‘이민자 미학’은 저항의 미학이라고 할 수 있다. 작가는 비판적인 관점으로 개념 미술을 이어 나가고 있으며, 이를 통해 침묵을 거부하고, 보다 민주적인 미래를 향한 구체적이고 상징적인 개입을 제안한다. 작가는 피해자의 위치에서 머무를 것이 아니라, 억압받는 사람들 간의 연대를 모색하고 보다 평등한 나라를 위해 나아가야함을 말하고 있다.” 라고 밝혔다.
장홍선은 뉴욕의 로체스터 인스티튜트에서 이미징 아트로 석사를 취득한후 뉴욕에서 설치 미술로 활동하는 하고 있는 현대 미술 작가이다. 지난 수년간 한국, 미국, 일본, 그리고 체코등에서 다수의 개인전 및 그룹전에 참여 했으며 최근 알재단 AHL-AWW Solo Exhibition Grant 등 다수의 기금을 수상했으며 아티스트 레지던시 프로그램에 참여 하였다. 현재 그는 이스트 빌리지의 PS122 스튜디오 프로그램에 참여하고 있다.
한편, AHL – AAW (Asian Art Works, Inc, 대표 크리스탈 킴) 개인전 그랜트는 미국에서 활발히 활동하는 한인 중견 예술가에게 개인전의 기회를 제공하고 지역 사회에 뛰어난 한국 현대 미술을 알리기 위해 2023년 신설 되었다. 아시안 아트 워크(AAW, Inc)는 2006년 크리스탈 킴이 뉴욕에서 설립하였으며 아시안 현대 미술과 문화를 국제 미술계에 소개하고 홍보하고 있다.
