The Whitney Biennial is a biennale exhibition of contemporary American art, typically by young and lesser known artists, on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The event began as an annual exhibition in 1932, the first biennial was in 1973. The Whitney show is generally regarded as one of the leading shows in the art world, often setting or leading trends in contemporary art. It helped bring artists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and Jeff Koons to prominence.
Whitney Biennial 2014 will take a bold new form as three curators from outside the Museum—Stuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at MoMA), Anthony Elms (Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago)—each oversee one floor, representing a range of geographic vantages and curatorial methodologies. The 103 participants offer one of the broadest and most diverse takes on art in the United States that the Whitney has offered in many years.
*This visit will be guided by Sun You, an artist who has exhibited her work in galleries and museums internationally, venues include Seoul Art Center, Kunstlerhause Schloss Balmoral, the Korean Cultural Center New York.
