Multimedia Artist YeonSook Lee Examines Memory, Perception, and Social Awareness Through Installations

NEW YORK, July 24, 2023 — AHL Foundation is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Korean artist YeonSook Lee. Lee creates convergence art and spatial installations incorporating diverse media to explore themes of daily experience, place memory, and shifts in perception. Her work symbolically reveals awareness of social issues by combining individual recollections with specific events, often using discarded everyday objects.

Lee pays close attention to how personal narratives accumulate and manifest over time in architectural spaces through video, sculpture, performance, and site-specific installations. Her work draws on collective memory, the passage of time, and stories of both the present and future to create public, private and historical site-specific installations. 

The artist also leads community workshops to examine how public remembrances might intersect with private experiences and become place memories that transcend time to form new narratives. As Lee has said, “Space becomes a place through memory.” Her projects recreate meaningful locales based on personal experience and recollection.

For example, Lee’s installation ““On ne sait Jamais 2021” reinterpreted the history of the former Armed Forces Gwangju Hospital for the Gwangju Biennale. “Running Stage_Space” used resident memories to symbolically reproduce Maehyang-ri. Her exhibitions like “Space and Place” and “Salad Bowl” incorporated synesthetic elements evoking light, sound and smell to further immerse viewers.

Lee graduated from Hongik University’s Department of Sculpture and London’s Goldsmith’s College. Her work has been widely exhibited in Korea and abroad. Her upcoming show “Voidscape” will be on view from July 26 to August 5, 2023 at the AHL Foundation in New York City.

뉴욕, 2023년 7월 24일 —  비영리 한인 미술 지원 단체 알재단(대표 이숙녀)에서 스페이스 파트너십의 일환으로 오는 7월 26일(수) 이연숙 개인전 “Voidscape (보이드스케이프)”를 개최한다.  한국을 기반으로 활동하는 작가 이연숙은 다양한 매체를 활용한 공간 설치 작품을 통해 일상의 경험, 장소의 기억, 인지의 변화 등을 탐구한다. 일상 속에서 버려진 물체를 사용하여 개인의 기억과 구체적 사건을 결합하여, 사회 문제 인식을 상징적으로 드러낸다. 

이연숙은 동영상, 조각, 퍼포먼스, 특정 장소 설치 등을 통해 개인의 이야기가 시간이 지나며 건축 공간에 축적되고 구현되는 것에 주목한다. 그의 작품은 집단 기억, 시간의 흐름, 현재와 미래의 이야기를 바탕으로 공공, 사적이며 역사적인 특정 장소 설치를 창작한다.

작가는 워크숍 등을 통해 공적 기억이 개인적 경험과 만나 장소의 기억을 형성하고, 이것이 시간을 초월하여 새로운 내러티브를 만들 수 있는지 탐구한다. 이연숙은 “기억을 통해 공간은 장소가 된다”고 말한다. 작가의 프로젝트는 개인의 경험과 기억을 바탕으로 의미 있는 장소를 재현한다. 예를 들어, 과거 이연숙의 설치 작품 ““On ne sait Jamais 2021”은 광주비엔날레를 통해 과거 국군 광주병원의 역사를 재해석한 작품이다. 그의 전시 “Space and Place”, “Salad Bowl” 등 또한 관람객의 몰입을 극대화하기 위해 빛, 소리, 냄새 등의 시네스테틱한 요소를 도입한 시도였다.  

한편, 이연숙은 홍익대학교 조소과와 런던 골드스미스 대학을 졸업했다. 그의 작품은 국내외에서 활발하게 전시되어 왔다. 이번 전시 “보이드스케이프”는 2023년 7월 26일부터 8월 5일까지 뉴욕 알재단에서 개최된다. 문의 info@ahlfoundation.org
