The AHL Foundation in partnership with Jason J. Kim Oral Design is pleased to have four artworks by Jaye Rhee on view at Jason J. Kim Oral Design Center New York from May 25 – November 23.

Jaye Rhee revels in the space between the ironic and the poignant. Rhee’s works explore narrative, memory, illusion, poetics, body and movement, music and performance. The works on view include photographs from “The Perfect Moment” series in which a young dancer reenacts a narrative told by an older dancer as she reminisces about her past and “The Flesh and the Book” series where the original members of the Mercer Cunningham Dance Company perform spontaneous and elegantly choreographed movements along five black horizontal bands evocative of a stringed instrument or a stave from sheet music.

Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Rhee studied at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago (BFA, MFA). Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including La Triennale di Milano 2016 (Milan, Italy), Kobe Biennale 2007 (Kobe, Japan), Mori Museum of Art (Tokyo, Japan), Albright Knox Art Gallery, Norton Museum of Art, Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum, Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University Museums, Aljira Contemporary, Galerie Gana Beaubourg (Paris, France), Centro pas os Assuntos da Arte e Architectura (Guimaraes, Portugal) Chicago Cultural Center, Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, S.Korea), Kyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (Kyeonggi, S.Korea) and Leeum Samsung Museum (Seoul, S.Korea).

Rhee was a resident artist at CAAA in Portugal (2014), Doosan residency in New York (2013), LMCC Swing Space Program in New York (2011), at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2009), Gyeonggi Creation Center Pilot Program (2009) and participated in Palais de Tokyo Workshop Program (2009). Her work has also been featured in Carol Becker’s essay, published in Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art by The University of California Press, and reviewed by the New York Times, ARTnews, Afterimage, Art Asia Pacific Magazine, and Art in Culture. She is a winner of AHL Foundation’s 2005 Contemporary Visual Art Awards.
