This class provides an introduction to the diversity of styles and modes of artistic expression as the engagement of ideological, cultural, social, and political values from ancient civilizations of the West to the present. It examines a wide range of paintings, sculptures, and architectures selected from various historical periods, artists, creative practices and themes throughout the study of Western art history. The information presented in this course aims to enhance your knowledge to recognize important works of art and historical styles, as well as to understand the historical context and cultural developments of the history of Western art. The course also discusses the Western art history in a global perspective, investigating cultural and artistic exchanges in different geographical regions related to one another, and how artistic styles were transmitted from one region to another.
Instructor: Joo Yun Lee, Ph.D. Candidate
Joo Yun Lee is a Ph.D. Candidate in Art History and Criticism at the Stony Brook University and a curator and writer working on the intersection of art, science, and technology in modern and contemporary art. She is a recipient of Fulbright Graduate Study Award and a 2013-2014 Helena Rubinstein Fellow in Curatorial Studies at the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
