Place: 339 5th Avenue #501, New York, NY 10016 (Between 33rd & 34th St. on 5th Avenue)

The course examines architecture and art of East Asia from prehistoric ages to the contemporary age. The primary objective is to help people develop their own historical perspective in interpreting art works and monuments of East Asia. With a primary focus on Korea, China and Japan, the course also includes cultural exchanges of East Asian countries with Western civilizations in order for people to procure a comparative perspective for understanding art historical development across cultural boundaries. The course demonstrates the interaction between form and idea in East Asia.

As a survey of major art works and monuments of East Asia this course presents chronological development of each period/dynasty/kingdom in Korea, China, and Japan with special topics each week. The class will also visit major collections of East Asian art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, or the Asia Society. Recent monographs or exhibition catalogues on East Asian art will be discussed in detail.
