The AHL Foundation in partnership with the Bank of Hope is pleased to present a six-month commission of artworks by Daru-Jung Hyang Kim to be on view at the Bank of Hope Manhattan Branch from January 18 – July 10, 2017. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, January 18th, 5:30-7:30PM.
Reflection presents Daru’s exuberant recent paintings that celebrate color and light. The vibrant paintings are personal interpretations of spirituality and nature. Utilizing variation of circles within circles and decorative patterns against a landscape Daru evokes the chi of nature and the eternally cyclical and ever-changing world.
According to Daru, her work is a response to her fascination with the two different ways of seeing; the hidden and mysterious aspects of nature versus painterly reality. “Certain sensations and memories from these particular moments – the fluttering of a butterfly, the splash of a raindrop, flickering lights through the morning fog – all encompass the emotional manifestation I attempt to create from my work. These motifs are then melded with the language of abstraction . . . I want to reveal the beauty of art making and
the humble act of retelling. I want to share the poetry of space and the rhythms that invite quiet and spiritual meditation.” By combining intimate marks and lyrical traces with bold gestures and repetitive patterning, Daru creates complex layers that beautifully capture the fragile and ephemeral world around us.
Daru was born in Daegu City, Korea and received her Bachelors degree from Seoul National University and her Masters degree from Pratt Institute. Since then, Daru has been widely exhibited in the United States, Korea and France, at venues such as the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts in Buffalo, the Phillips Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, Ben Shahn Galleries, 2 x 13 gallery, Allen Sheppard gallery, Amy Simon Fine Art Metaphor Contemporary Art, Kumho Museum, gallery BK, galerie Captlain-Matignon and Art More Gallery. Daru’s exhibitions have been reviewed in numerous publications including the New York Times, Art in America, Art Asia Pacific, Asia Times, Art in Culture, Wolgan Misool, Arts Gazette, Space Magazine, New York Sun, Buffalo News, Golf Herald, Business Week and numerous local newspapers, radio and television. Daru is the winner of MTA Arts for Transit – a permanent installation on the Jamaica Line Crescent Street Station. In 2011, Daru completed three monumental public art works in Korea for LIG Insurance. In 2012 and 2013 Daru completed public murals and lobby commissions for NYU Langone Medical Center permanently on view at 240 East 38th Street, New York.
