Description
“Camera Lucida Revisited” will show the works of a few visual artists inspired by Roland Barthes’s view on photography. Roland Barthes touched on crucial elements in photography as well as representation in general in his book Camera Lucida. First published in 1980/81, Camera Lucida, along with Susan Sontag’s On Photography, was one of the most influential books of criticism and theorization on photography in the US and also abroad. This exhibition of contemporary photography will focus on how his reading of photography has influenced young generations of Korean-American artists as well as other Asian or minority artists. Translated into Korean and published in 1986, Camera Lucida was widely read among aspiring art students in Korea. At the same time, Camera Lucida was translated into many languages, and artists of a minority background created works influenced by Barthes’ theory of photography. Artists interpreted this rather elusive book with their personal experience through a creative process of photography. Not only photographers but also artists of other media were also invited to participate: Buhm Hong, John Chang, Hye-Ryoung Min, So Yoon Lym, Jerry Truong.
