AHL Foundation presents 2022 AHL-Artist Fellowship Recipients Exhibition: Finding Oneself in Others

New York, NY – AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting contemporary artists of Korean descent, is proud to announce the opening of its 2022 AHL – Artist Fellowship Recipients Exhibition, Finding Oneself in Others, featuring artists Suhyun Choi, Jae Hwan Lim, Ken Gun Min, Kayla Tange.

Finding Oneself in Others is curated by Stéphanie Jeanjean, and presents artworks that explore the artists’ identities and emphasizes their positions as mediators or intercessors facilitating difficult or impossible (but important) conversations: between an adopted daughter and her estranged biological mother, between an immigrant and the culture he enters, between queer people and a society traditionally straight, or attempting to reengage a deserted dialogue between North and South Korea.

 

About the Artists

(Image) Suhyun Choi, Our Birthright: Love, Interdependence, Power, 2021

 

Suhyun Choi is a Korean non-binary third-culture kid.  Growing up in different social and cultural contexts has given them first-hand experiences in understanding the complexity of globalization, capitalism, colonialism, and how the macro affects the micro levels of human ontology and relationships. They are particularly interested in solidarity work amongst QTBIPOC across borders. Their work in BUFU, a collective they are a co-founder of, has been covered by publications such as the Village Voice, NYLON, Hyperallergic, the Fader, and many more and worked with institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, New Women Space, the New Museum, Abrons Art Center, and School for Poetic Computation. They are currently doing a New Media Leadership program for Ford Foundation and were a past artist in residence at Eyebeam, New York. They were a guest speaker at Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 for Tai Kwun Contemporary’s talk called “Labor and Privilege” as well as the Metropolitan Museum’s “Career Lab: Art and Activism” in 2017.

Jae Hwan Lim is a politically driven artist-activist and historian focusing on human rights and the struggles for democracy in the Korean Peninsula. Researching history and current issues in Korea, Lim creates social practices, installations, and performances that illuminate violence, discrimination, and inequality in society and politics. Lim is co-founder and director of Humans of North Korea (HNK), an organization that advocates for North Korean defectors and global citizenship, among other peace and political organizations. Lim is currently pursuing his doctoral study at the University of California, San Diego’s Ph.D. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism/Art Practice Program. With his dissertation “Collaborating Society: Art-Activism for Divided Korea,” Lim holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Area from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Ken Gun Min studied western painting and art history and theory at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea and received his MFA from the Academy of Art, University of San Francisco. Solo exhibitions include Silverlake Dog Park, Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles (forthcoming); Wounded Man, Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, K contemporary, Denver, CO; and Becoming Palm Tree, Gae Po Project Space, Seoul, Korea. Group exhibitions that featured Min’s work include Sparkle in, Fade out, Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA; Bozomag: Bozo Family Hoedown, M+B gallery, Los Angeles, CA; and 36 Paintings, Harper’s, East Hampton, NY. He was a Hopper Prize finalist and received awards from Direktorenhaus, Berlin, DE and the Kellogg Foundation, New York, NY. Min’s work has been featured in Artnet, ArtMaze Magazine, and Artsy Editorial.

Kayla Tange was born in South Korea and adopted by a Japanese American family. Through video, installation, sculpture, and, more directly with performance, a large portion of her work addresses structures of spectatorship while redefining ancestral trauma through public and private rituals. Her practice pendulates between literal and satirical while exploring ways of utilizing collaboration to convey feelings of longing and belonging, transforming stories of shame into a symbolic and valuable medium where psychic boundaries, desire, and permanence are recurring themes. She is part of diaspora collectives Han Diaspora Group, Hwa Records, and Chosun Family, as well as sex worker-run, shows Cyber Clown Girls and Stripper Co-op, which focus on fundraising, mutual aid, and community building through performance. Tange is also known under the stage name Coco Ono.

 

 

 

 

 

About The Curator

Stéphanie Jeanjean is an art historian, educator, translator, and independent curator. She received her M.A. in Art History from Bourgogne University in Dijon (focusing on contemporary art) and completed a Ph.D. in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York (focusing on early video and militant art in France). She currently teaches Art History at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and for the Master programs at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York. She is also a regular lecturer at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and for Smithsonian Journeys in Europe.

 

About The AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship

Established in 2019, the AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship is awarded to mid-career contemporary artists of Korean descent in support of their creative endeavors during key moments in their artistic and professional development. Four selected fellows receive a grant of $5,000 and the opportunity to showcase their work in a group exhibition in New York.

The AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship was made possible thanks to a generous contribution from the Dow Kim Family Foundation, a non-profit organization engaged in philanthropic activities in areas of education, social services, and arts & culture with a primary focus to help better and empower the lives of underserved and under-resourced Korean Americans.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 2022년도 아티스트 펠로우쉽 수상 작가전을 오는 10월 29일(토)에 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd. New York NY 10030)에서 개최한다. 다우김 재단 (Dow Kim Family Foundation)의 후원으로 운영 되는 본 프로그램과 전시는 심사 위원이자 교육자, 독립 큐레이터인 스테파니 진진(Stéphanie Jeanjean, Ph.D.)이 기획하였으며, 올 해의 아티스트 펠로우로 선정 된 최수현, 임재환, 민건엽, 케일라 탕게 씨가 작가로 참여한다.

본 전시 ‘Finding Oneself in Others (타인에게서 자신 찾기)’ 는 중재자 또는 어렵고도 중요한 대화를 시도하는 자로서 예술가의 정체성을 탐구하고, 작가의 위치를 강조하는 작품을 선보인다. 또한  회화, 설치, 비디오, 조각 등 멀티미디어 작품을 통해 입양 된 딸과 소원해진 생물학적 엄마, 이민자로서 진입하는 문화, 이성애중심 사회와 퀴어인, 그리고 북한과 남한 사이를 연결하고자 하는 대화의 장을 열고자 한다. 전시는 11월 17일(목)까지 계속 되며 알재단 갤러리 운영 시간 (수-토, 12-6시)에 누구나 무료로 관람할 수 있다.

참여 작가 소개

민건엽은 홍익대학교에서 미술이론과 회화를 전공하였으며, 아카데미 어브 아트 샌프란시스코 대학원에서 영화미술석사를 수료했다. 이후  스타워즈(루카스 필름)을 비롯한 다수의 영화에서 아티스트로 활동하다가 2014년에 로스앤젤레스로 이주하여  전업 미술 작가로 활동 중이다. 실버레이크 독파크(슐라밋 나자리안 갤러리, 로스앤젤레스), 상처입은 인간과, 거친세상, 세상의 종말(케이 컨템포러리, 덴버) 등 개인전과 M+B갤러리, Harper’s 등의 그룹전에 참여한 바 있다.

임재환은 한반도에서 일어나는 인권 억압과 민주주의를 향한 고투를 다루는 행동주의 예술가다. 대한민국과 조선민주주의인민공화국의 역사와 최근 이슈들을 연구하며 사회참여예술과 설치, 퍼포먼스를 통해 사회-정치에서 일어나는 폭력, 차별, 불평등을 작품으로 담아낸다. 북한이탈주민의 정착을 돕고 세계 시민권을 지지하는 단체 Humans of North Korea (HNK) 창립자 및 책임자이며 민주평화통일자문회의 자문위원 및 청년 기자 등 다양한 평화와 정치적 단체에서 활동한다. 서울문화재단 기획자 플랫폼 프로젝트 진행자로 선정, Hammer Museum Kay Nielsen Memorial 드로잉 대회에서 수상하였으며 경기도 DMZ 포럼, 노르웨이 스타방에르 인권 포럼 Global Network for Rights and Development, 미국 시카고 대학교 동아시아 도서관, 미국 로스앤젤레스 Broad Art Center, Helen J Gallery, 미국 호놀룰루 East-West Center 그리고 핀란드 헬싱키 대학교 등에서 프로젝트를 선보였다. 작가의 작품 및 소장품은 Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA)에 기록 보관 되어있다. 2022년 가을부터 캘리포니아 대학교 샌디에이고 (UCSD) 미술 역사, 이론, 비평과 실기를 전공으로 박사 프로그램을 시작한다. 캘리포니아 대학교 로스앤젤레스 (UCLA) 다학제적 예술분야에서 <사회와 협력하기: 분열된 한반도를 위한 행동주의 예술>을 논문으로 안드레아 프레이저, 바바라 크루거, 로드니 맥밀리언, 실케 오토-냅의 졸업 심사와 함께 석사를 졸업했고, 시카고 예술대학교 미술 전공으로 학사를 졸업했으며 서울대학교 정치외교학부 ISI를 수료했다.

최수현은 논바이너리 제3문화인인 한국인이다. 홍콩에서 태어나 한국, 필리핀, 캐나다, 미국 등에서 다양한 사회 문화 환경에서 성장하고 교육받으면서, 국제화, 자본주의, 식민주의, 인종차별 문제 등 국제 정치/경제의 거대 시스템이 개인의 존재 및 인간관계에 미치는 영향을 직접 체험하였다. 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 국경을 넘어선 연대활동에 큰 관심을 가지게 되면서 퀴어 트랜스젠더 BIPOC(Black 흑인, Indigenous 토착민, People of Color 유색인종)을 위한 예술활동을 시작하게 되었고 지금도 그 활동을 계속하고 있다. 최수현이 공동 창립한 콜렉티브 BUFU(By Us For Us/우리를 위한 우리를 의한)는 그 활동의 중요성 등이 Village Voice, NYLON, Hyperallergic, the Fader 등 다수 매체와 인터뷰를 통해 홍보 되었으며, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, New Women Space, the New Museum, Abrons Art Center, School for Poetic Computation 등 다수의 기관과 협업 프로젝트/프로그램을 진행한 바 있다. 최수현은 현재 Ford Foundation에서 뉴미디어 리더십 프로그램에 참여하고 있으며, 이 전에는 뉴욕 Eyebeam의 레지던시 참여 예술가였다. 최수현은 2017년 Tai Kwun Contemporary, 2018년 Art Basel 홍콩 초청 연사로 ‘노동과 특권’을 주제로 발제를 진행하였으며, 2017년 Metropolitan Museum의 ‘Career Lab : 예술과 액티비즘’에도 발제자로 초청되었다.

케일라 탕게는 한국에서 태어나 일본계 미국인 가정에 입양되어 자랐으며, 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 작가이다. 시, 사진 및 비디오에 대한 지대한 관심을 바탕으로 서서히 개념 퍼포먼스를 발전시켜왔다. 그의 작업에서 지속적으로 나타나는 주제는 정신적 경계, 욕망 및 영속성이다. 케일라 탕게는 아시아 공연자들을 위한 의식, 문화적 고정 관념 전복, 전래적 치유에 중점을 둔 온라인 쇼인 Sacred Wounds의 공동 프로듀서이다. 그는 Coco Ono라는 이름으로 공연자로서도 활동하고 있으며 “에로틱 개념주의자”라고 불리운다. 그 곳에서 탕게는 종종 어두운 유머로 정서적, 사회적 제한을 표현하곤 한다. 그는 자신의 경험들을 결합하고, 자신의 내러티브를 재조정 하면서 연결과 소속감의 필요성성과 죽음 및 돌연변이 등 의미 있는 대화의 장을 열고자 노력하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 Human Resources, Highways Performance Space, REDCAT, Torrance Art Museum, Performance Studies International, Melbourne, OUTFEST 및 Asian Pacific Film Festival에서 공연 및 전시 된 바 있다.
