The AHL Foundation is set to open a new facility to host its offices and a new gallery space in West Harlem, New York in April 2022. The facility, which will open 18 years after the foundation’s establishment, is located between Columbia University and City College. This new space will allow the AHL Foundation to exhibit works of contemporary artists of Korean descent and function as a platform for its Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) project. Founded by Sook-Nyu Lee in 2003 with acquaintances with a passion for visual art, the AHL Foundation has awarded $70,000 a year to artists, curators, and scholars of Korean descent active in the United States. In addition, the foundation has run a wide range of programs, including a mentoring program for artists, an exhibition project inviting overseas adopted Korean artists, museum tours and art history classes for Korean immigrants, and a public lecture series focusing on Korean art in collaboration with other institutions.  The AHL Foundation, which has maintained public transparency during the purchase process, announced that it had secured $400,000 out of the total cost of $720,000 for purchasing and renovating the space. “We expect to be able to plan programs stably from a long-term perspective and actually welcome more visitors with a new facility. Now that we are in the final stages of creating a space with the goal of opening next spring, we need your support more than ever,” President Lee said. Fundraising campaigns and a benefit auction are being held to reach their current fundraising goal of $320,000 USD.

The AHL Foundation has officially opened its Benefit Art Auction as part of fundraising efforts to complete the purchase of a new space. The auction will run through January 1st, 2022 and features works donated by numerous prominent Korean contemporary artists, including Park Seo-Bo, Ran Hwang, Kira Nam Greene, Kakyung Lee. Buhm Hong, Hyong Nam Ahn, Suzy Taekyung Kim, Sun You, Sun K.Kwak, Seongmin Ahn, Tai Hwa Goh, Sei Ryun Chun, Mikyung Kim, Yumi Hogan, Park Joon, Sunhee Kim Jung, Jaye Moon, Sung Ho Choi, and Daru Jung Hyang Kim. Winning bidders will be contacted after the auction concludes. 

 

2021 18th Annual Benefit Gala and Awards Ceremony will take place December 4th, 2021

The AHL Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Benefit Gala & Awards Ceremony on Saturday, December 4th at the Church of the Holy Apostles (296 9th Ave, New York, NY 10001) at 6:00pm. This will be its first in-person event since the beginning of the pandemic. The Foundation will be celebrating the accomplishments and fortitude of our burgeoning Korean contemporary art community, including the recipients of this year’s AHL – T&W Foundation Visual Art Awards, AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship, AHL – Wolhee Choe Memorial Art Writers Grant, AHL – Andrew Barbara Choi Family Foundation Grant, and AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Fellowship. Yumi Hogan, a Korean-American painter, Adjunct Professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and First Lady of Maryland, will participate as keynote speaker and deliver a congratulatory message.  There will be remarks and special presentations from the awardees and an overview of the AHL Foundation’s agenda for 2022.

“알재단, 뉴욕 웨스트 할렘에 새로운 공간 연다”

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 설립 18년 만에 뉴욕 웨스트 할렘에 전시 및 사무 공간을 마련하게 되었다. 2022년 4월 개관을 목표로 하는 알재단의 새로운 공간은 컬럼비아 대학과 시티 컬리지 중간에 자리 잡을 예정으로, 풍성한 할렘의 문화,역사 적 환경과 더불어 주변 교육 시설과의 협력 프로젝트를 진행할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다. 또한 실제 공간에서 미주 한인 예술가의 작품을 전시하고, 또 한인 현대 미술 아카이브 (Archive of Korean Artists in America; AKAA) 프로젝트의 구심점이 될 것이다. 

 2003년 이숙녀회장이 미술 애호가인 지인들과 함께 설립한 알재단은 연간 $70,000 달러의 기금을 한인 작가, 큐레이터, 아키비스트 및 연구자들에게 수여해왔다. 또한 작가를 위한 멘토링 프로그램, 해외 한인 입양작가 초청 전시 프로젝트, 일반인 대상 박물관 투어 및 미술사 수업과 한국 미술을 소개하는 대중 강연을 진행 해왔다. 지역 사업장에 작품을 소개하는 아트 인 더 워크 플레이스(Art In Workplace)또한 대표적인 전시 프로그램이다. 공간 구매 과정을 모두 투명하게 공개하고 대중과 공유하고 있는 알재단은 공간 매입과 레노베이션을 위한 총 비용 $720,000중 40만 달러를 확보했다고 밝혔다. 이숙녀 회장은 이에 “공간이 생기면 장기적인 관점에서 안정적으로 프로그램을 기획하고, 실제로 더 많은 방문객을 맞이 할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 내년 봄 개관을 목표로 공간 조성 마무리 단계에 있는 지금, 그어느때보다 여러분의 지원이 필요하다.” 라고 전했다. 

현재 목표 모금액은 $320,000 달러이며 이를 위해 후원캠페인과 베네핏 옥션을 진행하고 있다.

알재단의 베네핏 옥션에서는 박서보, 황란, 기라 남 그린, 이가경, 홍범, 안형남, 김태경, 선유, 곽선경, 안성민, 고태화, 김미경, 유미 호건, 박준, 문제이, 최성호, 김정향 작가가 기부한 작품을 구매할 수 있다. 작품 판매 수익은 알재단 공간 조성 비용에 사용되며, 구매자는 알재단 전시장 벽 후원자 명단에 표기 등 다양한 혜택이 있다. 현재 알재단 웹사이트(https://www.ahlfoundation.org/art-market/)에서 공식적으로 작품 응찰에 참여할 수 있으며 옥션은 2022년 1월 1일까지 진행 된다. 이후 알재단이 최종 구매자를 발표할 예정이다. 

 

2021 제18회 알재단 연례 갈라 및 시상식 개최 

작년 온라인 갈라를 성공리에 마친 알재단이 올해는 다시 현장에서 제18회 연례 베네핏 갈라 및 시상식을 개최한다. 오는 12월 4일 저녁 6시 Church of the Holy Apostles (296 9th Ave, New York, NY 10001)에서 개최 되는 알재단 갈라는 2021년 현대미술상(AHL – T&W Foundation Visual Art Awards), 아티스트 펠로우십(AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship), 알-최월희 메모리얼 작가 그랜트(AHL-Wolhee Choe Memorial Art Writers Grant), 알-앤드류 바바라 최 패밀리 재단 프로젝트 그랜트(AHL-Andrew Barbara Choi Family Foundation Grant), 알-전 패밀리 재단 큐레토리얼 펠로우십(AHL-Chun Family Curatorial Fellowship), 그레이스 채러티 파운데이션 리서치 펠로우십(AHL-Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship)을 수상하는 작가와 펠로우를 소개하고 후원자에게 감사하는 자리를 갖는다. 키노트 스피커로 미국의 화가이자 현재 메릴랜드주의 퍼스트 레이디인 유미 호건이 참여하여 축하의 메세지를 전할 예정이다. 더불어 작가들의 특별한 스토리 텔링 시간과 2022년 알재단 연례 계획을 발표하는 시간이 마련 되어있다. 갈라 참여 입장권은 개인의 경우 $300이며 테이블 (8인) 구  및 갈라 프로그램에 들어갈 광고 지면 후원은 info@ahlfoundation.org 로 문의.
