A Night Honoring Artists, Creatives, and Art Professionals in the Korean Community

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Korean contemporary art, held its 2021 18th Annual Benefit Gala & Awards Ceremony this past Saturday, December 4th at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Chelsea. With last year’s gala taking place virtually due to the pandemic, the foundation held this year’s gala in-person with a capacity set at 80 people. A total of 12 individuals took the stage to receive their awards, grants, and fellowships, including several artists, a writer, 2 researchers associated with the foundation’s Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA), and a curatorial fellow. In total, over $50,000 was awarded in prize money, stipends, and grants to the AHL Foundation’s 2021 honorees. Attendees were encouraged to participate in an online benefit auction to support the AHL Foundation’s purchase of a new facility in West Harlem and a bazaar market was also held. 

First Lady of Maryland and accomplished painter, Yumi Hogan gave the night’s keynote speech via video. This was followed by congratulatory remarks from Director of the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), Yun Jeung Jo and New York State Senator, Pete Harckham. Senator Harckham awarded AHL Foundation President and Founder, Sook Nyu Lee Kim with a proclamation in recognition of her hard work and dedication to the Korean contemporary art community. 

This year’s recipients for the AHL – T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards were Gold Prize winner Jin Yong Choi, Silver Prize winner Areum Yang, and Bronze Prize winner Jiwon Rhie. Receiving the AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship were Heehyun Choi, Yozmit, Gyun Hur, and Dohee Lee. AHL-Wolhee Choe Memorial Art Writers Grant was awarded to Yunlee Hong and the AHL-Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Project Grant was awarded to artist Mina Cheon. Jiyoung Lee received both the AHL-AKAA Senior Research Fellowship and the Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Fellowship. JooHee Kim was the recipient of the AHL-Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship. The final honoree of the night was KCCNY Executive Director Yun Jeung Jo, who received an Award of Special Recognition for his efforts in promoting Korean contemporary art. Artists John Pai, Myong Hi Kim, Tchah-Sup Kim, Sung-ho Choi, and Ran Hwang were all in attendance to show their support for the AHL Foundation. “As a queer Korean-American performance artist, I am deeply honored and grateful for this fellowship from the AHL Foundation,” remarked Yozmit, one of the four recipients of the 2021 AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship. “This recognition from the foundation is potentially a profound catalyst for my personal healing and the integration of my Korean roots.”

“I believe that the AHL Foundation’s development is critical to supporting Korean contemporary art and artists and it makes me so happy to see the fruit of our efforts right before my eyes tonight,” said AHL Foundation President and Founder Sook Nyu Lee Kim. “Our new space opening next year, the AKAA Senior Research Fellowship and digital overhaul, expansion of the Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Fellowship, and our current online benefit auction would never have been possible without the love, strength, and support of our board members, staff, and the artists active in the Korean contemporary art community. I think you can see that through the success of tonight’s gala and I’m incredibly happy,” she added. 

Since being established in 2003 to support Korean contemporary artists and art professionals active in the United States and promote Korean contemporary, the AHL Foundation has expanded its efforts to include exhibitions, educational programs, workshops, and various other programs related to informing the art world and general public about Korean contemporary art.

알재단 2021년 갈라 성황리 개최

수상 작가 및 미술 관계자 한자리에 모인 문화 예술인의 밤

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단 (대표 이숙녀)이 지난 12월 4일(토) 뉴욕 첼시 성 아포스톨루 교회(Church of the Holy Apostles)에서 제 18회 알재단 시상식 및 연례 갈라를 성황리에 마무리했다. 지난 해 온라인 갈라에 이어 올 해는 팬데믹으로 인원 수를 80여명으로 제한하여 행사를 진행하였다. 이날 현장에서는 2021년 알재단의 공모전, 그랜트 및 기금을 수여하게 된 미술 작가와 재미 한인 미술 아카이브(AKAA – Archive of Korean Artists in America) 연구원, 큐레토리얼 펠로우 등 12인에게 상장과 상금 총 5만여 달러를 전달하는 시상식과 알재단의 2022년 아젠다를 공유하는 시간을 가졌다. 더불어 내년 상반기 뉴욕 웨스트 할렘에 전시장을 마련 하는 공간 기금 조성 베네핏 옥션에 참여를 독려하고, 현장에서 바자회를 운영하였다.

 이날 알재단 갈라에는 매릴랜드 주의 퍼스트 레이디이자 중견 화가인 유미 호건(Yumi Hogan)의 키노트 스피치 영상을 시작으로, 뉴욕문화원 조윤증 원장 및 Pete Harckham 뉴욕주 상원의원이 축사를 했다. 특히 Pete Harckham 의원은 이숙녀 회장이 2003년부터 알재단을 통해 한국 현대미술의 부흥과 발전을 위하여 힘쏟은 노고를 기념하는 감사장을 전달하기도 하였다. 올해의 알재단의 아티스트 펠로우(AHL – Artist Fellowship)로 선정 된 작가 요즈밋(Yozmit) 은 “퀴어 한국계 미국인 퍼포먼스 아티스트로서 알재단에서 펠로우십을 받은 것을 기쁘게 생각한다. 이번 수상은 한국인으로서의 뿌리를 완성하고, 개인적인 힐링을 위한 촉매제가 될 것이라고 기대한다.” 라고 수상 소감을 밝혔다. 올 해 수상자로는 현대 미술 공모전(AHL-T&W Contemporary Visual Art Award) 금상에 최진용(Jin Yong Choi), 은상 양아름(Areum Yang), 동상 이지원(Jiwon Rhie), 아티스트 펠로우십(AHL-Artist Fellowship)의 최희현(Heehyun Choi), 요즈밋(Yozmit), 허견(Gyun Hur), 이도희(Dohee Lee), 그리고 고(故)월희 최 메모리얼 아트 라이터 그랜트(AHL-Wolhee Che Memorial Art Writers Grant)의 홍윤리(Yunlee Hong), 알-앤드류 바바라 최 패밀리 프로젝트 그랜트(AHL-Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Project Grant)의 천민정(Mina Cheon), 알-전 패밀리 파운데이션 큐레토리얼 펠로우십(AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Fellowship)과 AKAA 시니어 리서치 펠로우십(AHL-AKAA Senior Research Fellowship) 수상에 이지영(Jiyoung Lee), 알-그레이스 채러티 파운데이션 펠로우십(AHL-Grace Charity Foundation Fellowship)에 김주희(Joohee Kim)씨가 각각 선정되었다. 마지막으로 알재단은 뉴욕한국문화원 조윤증 원장에게 한국 문화 발전에 기여한 업적과 공로에 감사패를 전달하였다. 존 배, 김명희, 김차섭, 최성호, 황 란 등 한인 작가들도 다수 자리하여 시상식을 축하하고 알재단의 발전을 응원하였다.

 이숙녀 회장은 “알재단의 발전이 곧 한인 미술과 작가의 작업에 도움이 되는 길이라고 믿고 열심히 재단을 운영해온 성과가 더욱 눈에 보이는 것 같아 더할 나위 없이 기쁘다. 알재단의 새로운 전시 공간 개관, AKAA의 시니어 펠로우십 유치 및 아카이브 디지털화와 사이트 업데이트, 큐레토리얼 펠로우십의 확대와 현재 진행하고 있는 온라인 베네핏 옥션까지 이 모든 것은 한국 미술을 사랑하는 애호가 분들과 이사진, 알재단 직원과 무엇보다도 작업에 정진하는 아티스트들의 힘으로 가능했다. 2021년 갈라 행사를 성황리에 마친 것 같아 매우 기쁘다.” 라며 갈라 성료 후 소감을 전했다.

 한편  알재단은 미국 내 한인 예술가의 발전과 한국 현대 미술을 목적으로 2003년에 창립되었으며 작가와 큐레이터를 위한 후원 기금 뿐만 아니라 전시회, 교육 프로그램, 워크숍 등 다양한 프로그램으로 한국 현대 미술의 지지층을 넓혀가는 데 앞장 서고 있다.
