AHL Foundation Announces Four Selected Artists for the 2025 AHL-AAPI Women Artist Cohort
New York, NY – The AHL Foundation is pleased to announce the four artists selected for the 2025 AHL-AAPI Women Artist Cohort. This inaugural cohort celebrates the voices of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women artists who engage with vital conversations surrounding gender justice, race, and art movements. The selected artists—Soeun Bae, Lena Chen, hamsa fae, and Ibuki Kuramochi—were chosen through an open call in October 2024. They will participate in an intensive three-month program, culminating in a group exhibition at the AHL Foundation Gallery in March 2025.
The AHL-AAPI Women Artist Cohort provides a platform for AAPI women artists to explore and address critical issues through their artistic practices. The selected artists will collaborate with curator Joyce Chung (Curator, Asian Art Initiatives), who will offer insights into their creative processes through studio visits, co-lead workshops, and curate the exhibition. Through development workshops, the artists will research each other’s practices, share their perspectives, and refine the works they will present in the exhibition. This program aims to support professional and creative growth while fostering meaningful public engagement with the artists’ work.
The program, which runs from November 2024 to March 2025, includes studio visits, workshops, and opportunities for collaboration with a curator. The group exhibition, scheduled for March 15, 2025, will be accompanied by community-driven programming designed to engage the broader public in dialogues about gender and racial justice.

About Artists
Soeun Bae
Soeun Bae (b. South Korea) was raised in Alabama, and now based in New York. Bae works with sculpture, technology, and performance to question what it is to be living inside of a body. She participated in Wave Hill’s Sunroom Project, and completed residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO), NARS Foundation (NY), and Velvetpark Media (NY). Bae completed her BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2023.
Lena Chen
Lena Chen (b. 1987, San Francisco) explores care, intimacy, race, and gender through an artistic practice spanning performance, new media, and socially engaged art. Collaborating with communities including sex workers, reproductive health workers, and trauma survivors, she has exhibited, screened, and performed her work internationally. Awarded Mozilla Foundation’s Creative Media Award and Best Emerging Talent at B3 Biennial of the Moving Image, her art is in the collections of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, the MUST Museo del territorio in Vimercate, Italy, and the University of California, Irvine. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in performance studies at UC Berkeley, she earned a B.A. in sociology from Harvard University and a M.F.A. at the Carnegie Mellon School of Art.
hamsa fae
hamsa fae (b. Los Angeles) is a Vietnamese-French poet and contemporary artist whose work combines live performance with movement, sound, and everyday objects. With a decade of research in shamanism, she uses memory to dreamscape portals into ethereality — a third space for reclaiming cultural identities and cosmologies often unseen/unspoken. Her works socially engage audiences to remember the in-between and beyond.
Ibuki Kuramochi
Ibuki Kuramochi (b. Japan) is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in Butoh dance, performance, video, installation, and painting. Her work delves into the poetic physicality of Butoh and themes of metamorphosis, Womankind, and sexuality. Since 2016, she has trained with Yoshito Ohno at the renowned Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance Studio. Kuramochi’s work has been exhibited internationally in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, and Rome, and she was featured as Artist of the Year in LA WEEKLY’s “People 2019.” She is a recipient of the 2024 City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Performing Arts Division awards and the 2022 SCIART Ambassador Fellowship. Recent highlights include exhibitions at the Torrance Art Museum, PST Art and Science Collide presented by Getty, and Craiova Art Museum Romania, as well as lectures at art college in Tokyo and the NY Film Academy.
About Curator
Joyce Chung is the Curator at Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia, where she oversees the exhibition and performance program. Her curatorial projects focus on the complexity of identity and representation through the lens of the politics of place. Chung is also interested in artistic exploration of struggles and hardships that are often overlooked, such as those of ethnic and gender minorities, women, and immigrants. She previously worked at a number of museums and galleries both in Korea and the United States, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Hyundai Card, Kukje Gallery, as well as for the Gwangju Biennale and Performa, New York. Chung holds an MA in the Humanities with a concentration in Art History from the University of Chicago and a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University.

AHL Foundation, AHL-AAPI 여성 아티스트 코호트 선정 작가 4인 발표
뉴욕, NY – 비영리 한인 미술 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 회장 이숙녀)이 2025년 AHL-AAPI 여성 아티스트 코호트 (AHL-AAPI Women Artist Cohort)에 선정된 네 명의 작가를 발표했다. 알재단이 올해 처음으로 진행 하는 본 코호트 프로그램은 성 평등, 인종 정의, 예술 운동을 주제로 작업과 창작 활동을 하는 아시아계 미국인 및 태평양 제도(Asian American and Pacific Islander; AAPI) 여성 예술가들의 목소리를 조명한다. 선정된 작가들은 배소은(Soeun Bae), 레나 첸(Lena Chen), 함사 패(hamsa fae), 쿠라모치 이부키(Ibuki Kuramochi)이며, 2024년 10월 오픈콜(Open Call)을 통해 선발되었다. 이들은 3개월 동안의 집중 프로그램에 참여하고, 2025년 3월 AHL Foundation Gallery에서 열리는 그룹 전시회에서 각자의 작업을 선보일 예정이다.
AHL-AAPI Women Artist Cohort는 AAPI 여성 예술가들이 그들의 예술적 실천을 통해 중요한 이슈를 탐구하고 다룰 수 있는 플랫폼을 제공한다. 선정된 작가들은 큐레이터 조이스 청(Asia Art Initiatives 큐레이터)과 협력하며, 큐레이터는 작가들의 창작 과정을 이해하고 피드백을 제공하는 스튜디오 방문, 워크숍 공동 진행 및 전시 주제 개발을 진행한다. 워크숍을 통해 작가들은 서로의 작업을 연구하고, 각자의 관점을 공유하며, 전시에서 선보일 작품을 발전시킨다. 이 프로그램은 아시아계 여성 작가들의 전문적이고 창의적인 성장을 촉진하고, 작품을 통해 공공의 대중 및 지역 커뮤니티와 함께 소통할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

참여 작가 소개
배소은 Seoun Bae
배소은 (한국 출생)은 앨라배마에서 자랐으며, 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 배소은은 조각, 기술, 공연을 통해 인간의 몸 안에서 살아가는 경험을 질문한다. Wave Hill의 Sunroom Project에 참여했으며, Anderson Ranch Arts Center(CO)와 NARS Foundation(NY), Velvetpark Media(NY)에서 레지던시 프로그램에 참여 했다. 배소은은 2023년 Rhode Island School of Design에서 조각 전공으로 미술 학사(BFA)를 취득했다.
레나 첸 Lena Chen
레나 첸 (1987년, 샌프란시스코 출생)은 공연, 새로운 미디어, 사회적 참여 예술을 통해 돌봄, 친밀함, 인종 및 성별을 탐구한다. 성노동자, 생식 건강 노동자, 트라우마 생존자 등과 협력한 그의 작품은 국제적으로 상영되고, 전시되고, 공연 되어왔다. Mozilla Foundation의 Creative Media Award와 B3 Moving Image Biennial에서 Best Emerging Talent를 수상한 레나 첸의 작품은 네바다 미술관의 Center for Art + Environment, 이탈리아 빔메르카테의 MUST Museo del territorio, 그리고 UC Irvine의 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다. 하버드 대학교에서 사회학을 전공했으며, Carnegie Mellon School of Art에서 미술 석사(MFA)를 취득했다. 현재 UC Berkeley에서 공연학 박사 과정을 밟고 있다.
함사 패 hamsa fae
함사 패 (로스앤젤레스 출생)는 베트남-프랑스계 시인 겸 현대 예술가로, 라이브 공연과 움직임, 소리, 일상적인 오브제를 결합한 작업을 한다. 샤머니즘에 관한 10년의 연구를 통해 기억을 사용하여 종종 보이지 않고 언급되지 않는 문화적 정체성과 종교적 우주관을 회복하기 위한 제3의 공간을 꿈꾸고 있다. 함사패는 작품을 통해 사회적으로 관객의 참여를 유도하여 그 사이와 그 너머를 기억하고자 한다.
쿠라모치 이부키 Ibuki Kuramochi
쿠라모치 이부키 (일본 출생)는 부토(Butoh) 춤, 공연, 영상, 설치, 회화를 전문으로 하는 다원예술 작가이다. 이부키의 작업은 부토의 시적인 신체성과 변형, 여성성 및 성적 정체성을 주제로 탐구한다. 2016년부터 요시토 오노와 함께 Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance Studio에서 훈련을 받은 바 있다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕, 로스앤젤레스, 도쿄, 파리, 로마 등 국제적으로 전시되었으며, LA WEEKLY의 ‘People 2019’에서 Artist of the Year로 선정되기도 하였다. 또한 2024년 2024년 로스앤젤레스 시 문화부 공연 예술 부문 상과 2022년 SCIART 홍보 대사 펠로우십을 수상했습니다. 최근에는 Torrance Art Museum, Getty의 PST Art and Science Collide, Craiova Art Museum(루마니아) 등에서 전시하고, 도쿄 미술대학과 NY Film Academy에서 강의를 진행했다.
큐레이터 소개
조이스 정 Joyce Chung
조이스 정은 필라델피아 소재 Asian Arts Initiative에서 큐레이터로 활동하며 전시 및 공연 프로그램을 총괄하고 있다. 조이스 정의 큐레토리얼 프로젝트는 장소의 정치적 관점에서 복잡한 정체성과 대표성의 문제에 집중한다. 그는 간과되기 쉬운 여성과 이민자, 소수민족, 성소수자의 고통과 투쟁을 예술적으로 탐구하고 조명하는 데 관심이 있다. 조이스 정은 국립현대미술관, 현대카드, 국제갤러리, 광주비엔날레 및 뉴욕 퍼포마 등 한국과 미국에서 여러 박물관과 갤러리에서 근무한 바 있으며, 시카고 대학교에서 미술사 전공으로 인문학 석사(MA)를, 웨슬리안(Wesleyan) 대학교에서 미술사학 학사(B.A.)를 취득했다.
