New York, NY – AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting contemporary artists of Korean heritage, is proud to announce the opening of the inaugural AHL-Founder S.N.Kim Grant Invitational Exhibition titled “Ran Hwang: Breathwave.”

This exhibition is planned as part of the AHL Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support and foster networking and collaboration among award-winning artists over the past 20 years. AHL Foundation’s President, Sook Nyu Lee Kim, who founded the Foundation in 2003 and currently serves as its president, launched for the first time this year, aims to continue this tradition by providing funding to facilitate ongoing collaboration and support among award-winning artists. The inaugural exhibition features the solo show of artist Ran Hwang, the recipient of the AHL Foundation’s 1st Contemporary Art Award and the 2017 AHL Foundation-Jason J. Kim Grant.

Born in Korea and active in New York, Ran Hwang creates large iconic figures that embody her preoccupation with the nature of cyclical life, non-visibility and the beauty of a transient moment. Her earlier career in the fashion industry and the personal memories of the 9/11 attack have led her to adopt the everyday materials into the delicate and dramatic works, whereas the artist’s lifetime practice of Zen Buddhism has blended into the sophisticated hand-work accompanied by repetition and penance. Through her performative and conceptual approach, Hwang depicts the time of reflection and rumination of a human being in the society. 

Hwang’s work permanently resides in the collections of internationally acclaimed venues, including the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Deji Art Museum in Nanjing, Dubai Opera House, Des Moines Art Center in Iowa, New York University and National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. 

Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions and galleries including Leila Heller Gallery in New York (2021, 2017, 2014, 2012) and Dubai (2023, 2021, 2019), Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore (2017), UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (2015), Mass MoCA in Boston (2015), Fondation d’entreprise Hermès in Singapore (2014), Hakgojae Gallery in Seoul (2010) and Kashya Hildebrand Gallery in Zurich (2009), the Facebook New York Headquarter in 2021. Recently, she has successfully done her exhibition in Baker Museum in Florida, USA in 2023, and in April 2024, her exhibition “Singing from the Dark Times” is scheduled for the Venice Biennale NDH.

President Sook Nyu Lee Kim stated, “Over the past 20 years, AHL Foundation has supported over 100 Korean artists, curators, and researchers with annual funding exceeding $50,000. Through this process, we have witnessed the growth of talented Korean artists. With this grant, we look forward to continued collaboration with AHL Foundation award-winning artists. In that sense, we are delighted to invite Ran Hwang, the inaugural recipient of the first AHL Foundation Contemporary Art Award, as the first exhibiting artist in this series. We hope many people will enjoy the spectacular and delicate installation work by Ran Hwang, which will encompass the entire AHL Foundation gallery during the exhibition period.”

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 오는 2월 15일(목) 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York NY 10030)에서 중견 작가 황 란을 초대하여 제1회 알재단 창립자 이숙녀 회장 그랜트 (AHL-Founder S.N.Kim Grant) 초대전 <Ran Hwang: Breathwave>을 개최한다. 

이번 전시는 2003년 알재단을 창립하고 현재는 회장으로 재직 중인 이숙녀 회장이 지난 20여년간 알재단을 통해 수상한 작가들을 지속적으로 후원하고 수상 작가 간 네트워킹과 협력을 지원하기 위해 올해 처음으로 개설한 기금으로 기획하였다. 제1회 기금 전시는 개인전으로 작가 황란을 초대하였다. 황 란은 알재단의 1회 현대미술상 수상 작가이자 2017년 제2회 알재단-제이슨 제이 김 그랜트의 수상자이기도 하다.

한국에서 태어나 뉴욕에서 활동 중인 황 란 작가는 인간 관계망의 세계, 가시성과 비가시성, 그리고 찰나의 아름다움을 크고 상징적인 이미지로 형상화 한다. 그는 일찍이 패션계에서 일을 한 경험과 가까운 곳에서 9/11 사태를 겪은 개인적 기억을 바탕으로, 일상의 재료를 차용하여 섬세하고 감각적인 이미지를 작품에 구현한다. 또한 반복과 고행을 동반하는 정교한 수작업을 통해 ‘관계의 그물’ 점과 선들이 이루는 네트워크의 세계에서 ‘관계’ 그 자체가 ‘전체’인 상즉(相卽)’의 세계, 순수한 관계망의 세계를 표현하고 있다.

황 란의 작품은 뉴욕 브루클린 미술관, 텍사스 휴스턴 미술관, 난징 데지 미술관, 두바이 오페라 하우스, 아이오와 디모인 예술 센터, 뉴욕 대학교 로비, 아부다비 왕궁 컬렉션, 한국 국립 현대미술관 등 국제적으로 인정받는 장소들의 컬렉션에 영구적으로 소장되어 있다.

그의 작품은 AAW(Asian Art Works), Leila Heller Gallery, New York and Dubai, Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul, 플로리다의 베이커 미술관싱가포르의 ACM:아시아 시빌라이제이션 미술관, 파리의 유네스코 본부, 보스턴의 미술관 Mass MoCA, 싱가포르의 에르메스 재단, 페이스북(메타)뉴욕 본사 등에서 국제적으로 전시되었으며, 최근 2023년에는 베이커 미술관에서 성공적으로 개인전을 마쳤다. 그리고 2024년 4월 베니스비엔날레 NDH “Singing from the Dark Times” 전시가 예정되어 있다.

이숙녀 회장은 “알재단은 지난 20여년 100여명이 넘는 한인 작가, 큐레이터, 연구자에게 매년 5만불 이상의 기금을 후원해왔다. 그 과정에서 재능있는 한인 작가의 성장을 지켜볼 수 있었다. 이번 기금을 통해 알재단 수상작가들과의 지속적인 협업을 기대하고 있다. 그런 의미에서 이번 전시에는 제1회 알재단 현대미술상 수상작가인 황란 작가를 첫 전시 작가로 초대하게 되었다. 많은 분들이 전시기간 알재단 갤러리 전체를 감싸는 황란 작가의 스펙타클하고 섬세한 설치 작업을 볼 수 있기를 기대한다.” 라며 기금 후원 및 전시 개최 소감을 밝혔다.
