2024 알재단-명지대학교 대학원 심포지엄
‘국내와 해외에서의 한국현대미술’ 성료

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation 대표 이숙녀)이 2024년 1월 27일(토), 오후 2시에 명지대학교 미술사학과와 함께 진행 한 ‘국내와 해외에서의 한국 현대 미술’이 성황리에 개최되었다.
이번 심포지엄은 이지은 명지대학교 미술사학과 교수의 ‘쇼케이스: 서구에 선보인 한국의 동시대 미술’을 주제로 한 기조발제를 시작으로 김윤영(아라리오 뮤지엄 큐레이터/명지대 박사과정)씨의 ‘윤명로의 1960-1970년대 작업 형성기 작품 연구’, 최영식(명지대 미술사학과 석사과정)씨의 ‘김구림의 1970년대 작업과 한국의 근대화 과정’ 및 김지현(명지대 석사 과정, 서양미술사학회 총무간사)씨의 ‘인류세의 인간과 비인간:한국 동시대 미술의 사례연구’ 발표가 있었으며, 심포지엄의 마지막 순서로 뉴욕주립대 올드 웨스트버리의 이혜원 교수(Assistant Professor of Art History, Visual Arts Dept. & Director of the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery, SUNY Old Westbury)가 발표자들과 패널 디스커션을 진행했다.
약 40여명의 중견 작가, 미술관 관계자, 큐레이터 및 일반인이 참여하여 알재단 갤러리 공간을 가득 채웠으며 해외의 한국 미술에 대한 논의에 대한 열기로 예정 된 시간인 3시간보다 더 길게 진행 되었다. 이날 심포지엄 참여자는 ‘그동안 한국인으로 뉴욕에서 30여년간 작가로 활동하며 가졌던 의문과 궁금증이 시원하게 해결되었다’다고 소감을 밝히기도 하였다. 본 심포지엄은 알재단과 명지대학교가 공동으로 기획하였으며 포스코 홀딩스 (Posco Holdings)의 후원으로 성사 되었다. 알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “앞으로도 알재단은 현재 알재단의 아카이브 사업인 AKAA(Archive of Korean Artists in America)를 비롯, 한국과 미국의 여러 대학 및 연구 기관과 협력하여 한인 예술가들의 미국 내 다양한 활동상과 작업 세계를 논의하고 기록할 수 있도록 할 예정이다.” 라고 개최 소감을 밝혔다.

“2024 AHL Foundation – Myongji University Graduate School Symposium ‘Issues of Korean Contemporary Art in Korea and Abroad’ Completed.

The non-profit art organization supporting Korean artists in the U.S., AHL Foundation, successfully hosted the ‘Issues of Korean Contemporary Art in Korea and Abroad’ symposium in collaboration with the Department of Art History at Myongji University on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
The symposium began with a keynote presentation by Professor Jieun Rhee, a professor of Art History at Myongji University, on ‘Showcase: Korean Contemporary Art Presented in the West.’ Subsequent presentations included Yunyoung Kim (Curator at Arario Museum/Ph.D. candidate at Myongji University) discussing ‘Yun Myung-ro’s Formative Works in the 1960s and 1970s,’ Youngsik Choi (M.A. in Art History at Myongji University) exploring ‘Kim Ku-rim’s Works in the 1970s and Korea’s Modernization Process,’ and Jihyun Kim (M.A. at Myongji University, Secretary-General of the Society of Western Art History) presenting ‘Human and Non-human Beings in the Anthropocene: Case Studies in Korean Contemporary Art.’ The final part of the symposium featured a panel discussion led by Professor Hyewon Yi from the State University of New York at Old Westbury.
Approximately 40 participants, including mid-career artists, art-related professionals, curators, and the general public, filled the AHL Foundation gallery space. The discussion on Korean art abroad exceeded the scheduled three-hour duration due to the enthusiastic engagement of the participants. Attendees expressed satisfaction, stating that the symposium provided clear answers to questions and curiosities they had harbored during their 30 years of artistic endeavors in New York as Korean immigrants. The symposium, co-planned by AHL Foundation and Myongji University, was made possible through sponsorship from Posco Holdings. AHL Foundation President Sook Nyu Lee Kim announced, “In the future, AHL Foundation plans to collaborate with various universities and research institutions in Korea and the United States to discuss and document the diverse activities and artistic worlds of Korean artists in the United States, including our current AKAA (Archive of Korean Artists in America) project.”
