AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting artists of Korean descent, is proud to announce the winners of its 2023 20th Annual AHL – T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards. Soeun Bae received this year’s Gold Prize, Dana Devenport the Silver Prize, and Mija Jung the Bronze Prize. They will receive $5,000, $4,000, and $3,000 in prize money, respectively. These three artists will also be given the opportunity to showcase their work as part of a group exhibition in AHL Foundation’s gallery in October 2023. Established in 2003, the Contemporary Visual Art Awards is an annual competition open to all contemporary artists of Korean descent active in the United States and is the AHL Foundation’s highlight program. Since 2016, the awards have been supported by the T&W Foundation, established by Wonsook Kim and Thomas Park Clement. 

The jurors for this year’s awards were Gary Carrion-Murayari, Kraus Family Curator at the New Museum Summer Guthery, Director and Chief Curator at Canal Projects and Lauren Haynes, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Programs, Queens Museum

Soeun Bae (Gold Award) is a multidisciplinary artist who uses sculpture, performance, and technology to question what it is to be living inside of a body. She focuses on the impossible desires and persistence within the disappearing skin and dissociating body. With these themes, she creates pleasurable objects that present a reductive and depersonalized way of relating to our bodies. Her work has been performed or exhibited in the RISD Museum, Gelman Gallery, Red Eye Gallery, Woods-Gerry Gallery, Memorial Hall Gallery in Providence, RI and L.A.D., Geunwonji, and Projectspacewip in Seoul. She received a BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Dana Davenport (Silver Award) is a Korean and Black-American interdisciplinary artist raised in Seoul, South Korea, and currently based between Los Angeles and Brooklyn. Her work shifts between installation, sculpture, video, and performance. Within her practice, she addresses the complexities that surround interminority conflict as a foundation for envisioning her own and the collective futurity of Black and Asian peoples. Davenport’s work has been shown throughout the United States and internationally including Gibney Dance, New York, NY; Watermill Center, Water Mill, NY; NYU Skirball, New York, NY; Brown University, Providence, RI; Swivel Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Cultural Center Recoleta, Buenos Aires, AR; and Seventh Gallery, Melbourne, AUS, to name a few. Davenport was selected for the Recess Session Residency in 2021 and received the 2018 Chashama ChaNorth Fellowship. She was awarded the 2023 Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship from the Center for Craft and is currently a Bandung Artist in Residence with MoCADA and Asian American Arts Alliance.

Mija Jung (Bronze Award), born in Korea, is a painter based in New York. Their abstract paintings color human emotion in a social and cultural space based on gender-neutral aesthetics. Mija’s education began with the Korean minimalist masters of Hong-ik University, where they received an MFA and BFA in painting. They later received a second MFA in painting from Rutgers, where they studied with American cultural activists. Mija’s work has been exhibited internationally in galleries like the New York Arts Center, Robert Miller Gallery, and Socrates Sculpture Park in New York; Hyundai Gallery and Kwanhoon Gallery in Seoul; Kleine Humboldt Galerie, Galerie Nord, and Atelierhof Kreuzberg in Berlin; and Galerie ARTQ13 in Rome. They are recipients of the Ellis Elizabeth Scholarship in the United States and the MBC Grand Art Award in South Korea.

AHL Foundation President and Founder Sook Nyu Lee Kim said, “This year, the judges carefully selected three winners from the outstanding pool of applicants. The number of artists who have supported the Contemporary Visual Arts Awards, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, has now exceeded 74. Among them, many artists have grown into proud mid-career artists and are actively engaged worldwide. I would like to congratulate the winners and express hope that many young artists will continue to apply for next year’s Contemporary Visual Arts Awards and be inspired by their work.”

The award ceremony will be held at the AHL Foundation’s Annual Gala on September 8, 2023 in Chelsea, New York and an exhibition featuring the works of the winning artists is scheduled for October 2023. 현대 미술 공모전 심사 결과 발표

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation 대표 이숙녀) 이 2023년 제20회 현대미술 공모전(AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards)의 수상자를 발표했다. 금상은 배소은(Soeun Bae), 은상에 다나 데이븐포트(Dana Davenport), 금상은 정미자(Mija Jung)씨가 수상하였으며, 각 상 별로 상금 5,000불, 4,000불, 3,000불을 받게 된다. 수상 작가는 작품 활동을 위한 상금 외에도 알재단에서 열리는 그룹 전시회에 참여 할 수 있는 기회를 가진다. 알재단의 설립과 동시에 시작된 현대 미술 공모전은 2003년 창설이래 매년 미국에서 활동하는 한국계 미술인이면 누구나 지원 할 수 있는 알재단의 대표 프로그램이다. 2016년 부터는 중견 화가 김원숙씨와 토마스 클레멘트(Thomas Park Clement)씨가 설립한 T&W 재단의 후원으로 운영하고 있다. 

올해 현대미술상 심사 위원으로는 스 뉴뮤지엄의 큐레이터 개리 캐리온 무라야리(Gary Carrion-Murayari, Kraus Family Curator at the New Museum) 커널 프로젝트(Canal Projects)의 디렉터이자 수석 큐레이터인 써머 거더리 (Summer Guthery) 그리고 퀸즈미술관의 전시 및 프로그램 디렉터(Director of Curatorial Affairs and Programs, Queens Museum)인 로렌 헤인즈(Lauren Haynes)가 참여했다.

금상 수상작가 배소은은 조각, 퍼포먼스, 테크놀로지를 통해 몸 안에서 살아간다는 것이 무엇인지 질문한다. 그녀는 사라져가는 피부와 해리(융해) 되는 신체 내부의 불가능한 욕망과 지속성에 집중한다. 이러한 주제를 통해 그녀는 우리 몸과 관계를 맺는 환원적이고 비인격화된 방식을 제시하는 오브제를 만든다. 그녀의 작품은 프로비던스에 위치한 RISD 뮤지엄, Gelman 갤러리, Red Eye 갤러리, Woods-Gerry 갤러리, Memorial Hall 갤러리, 서울에 위치한 L.A.D, 근원지, 프로젝트스페이스 등에서 전시 및 공연되었다. 배소은은 로드아일랜드 디자인 스쿨(Rhode Island School of Design)에서 조소과 학사 학위를 수여 받았다.

은상의 다나 데이븐포트는 한국계 흑인 미국인 다원예술아티스트로 서울에서 자란 후 현재 LA와 브루클린을 오가며 활동하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 설치, 조각, 비디오, 공연 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며, 소수자 간 갈등의 복잡성을 다룬다. 그는는 작업을 바탕으로 흑인과 아시아인의 미래(future)를 상상하고자 한다. 그의 작품은 미국을 비롯 전세계에서 전시 된 바 있으며, 그 중에는 뉴욕의 깁니 댄스(Gibney Dance), 워터밀 센터(Watermill Center), NYU 스킬볼(NYU Skirball), 브라운 대학교(Brown University), 브루클린의 스위블 갤러리(Swivel Gallery), 아르헨티나의 레콜레타 문화 센터(Recoleta Cultural Center), 호주 멜버른의 세븐스 갤러리(Seventh Gallery) 등이 있다. 작가는 2021년 리세스 세션 레지던시(Recess Session Residency)에 선정되었고, 2018년 샤샤마 차노스펠로우십(Chaschama ChaNorth Fellowship)을 수상한 바 있다. 그녀는 2023년 센터 포 크래프트의 크래프트 리서치 펀드 아티스트 펠로우십(Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship)을 수상했으며, 현재 MoCADA와 아시아계 미국인 예술 연합(Asian American Arts Alliance)의 반둥 아티스트 레지던스(Bandung Artist in Residence) 작가로도 활발히 활동하고 있다.

동상의 정미자 작가는 한국에서 태어나 현재는 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하는 화가이다. 그의 추상회화는 인간의 감정을 성 중립적 미학을 바탕으로, 사회와 문화의 공간속에서 색채화한다. 정미자는 홍익대학교의 한국 미니멀리스트 대가들로부터 사사, 회화전공으로 대학과 대학원을 졸업했다. 그는 이후에 럿거스 대학(Rutgers University)에서 에서 회화 전공으로 두번 째 석사 학위를 마쳤으며, 뉴욕의  New York Arts Center, Robert Miller Gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park을 비롯 서울의 현대갤러리, 관훈갤러리 및 베를린의 Kleine Humboldt Galerie, Galerie Nord, Atelierhof Kreuzberg 및 로마의 Galerie ARTQ13 등 세계 유수 갤러리에서 작품을 선보여왔다. 미국의 엘리스 엘리자베스 장학금(the Ellis Elizabeth Scholarship)과 한국의 MBC 예술대상을 수상하기도 했다. 

알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “올 해도 심사위원들이 뛰어난 지원자들 중에서 고심 끝에 수상작가 3인을 선정하였다. 20주년을 맞이하는 현대미술상이 지원해 온 작가들도 벌써 74명이 넘는다. 이 중 많은 작가들이 현재에도 전 세계 곳곳에서 자랑스러운 중견 작가로 성장하여 활동하고 있다. 이번 수상자들에게 축하의 메시지를 전하며, 앞으로도 많은 신진작가들이 현대미술상을 지원하여 작업하는 데 영감을 얻기를 바란다.” 라고 선정 작가 발표 소감을 전했다.
