New York, NY – AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting Korean contemporary art, is proud to announce the opening of its annual exhibition of Korean adopted artists, Sensoria. Curated by Katie Yook, the exhibition presents artworks by Se Young Au, Jette Hye Jin Mortensen, and KimSu Theiler.

 

The exhibition aims to bring to the forefront a group of an estimated 200,000 children adopted from Korea between the end of the Korean War until the mid 2000s who, despite geographical dispersal, maintain a strong global community. By bringing the artists’ narratives to the forefront, Sensoria looks to expand the notion of Korean identity and bring to light the sociohistorical underpinnings of adoption.

 

The exhibition’s title refers to the complex set of stimuli that make up one’s perception of the world. Spanning video, sound, drawing and installation, the exhibition is themed around the artists’ use of non-visual senses, such as sound, scent, narrative and digital technologies to explore complex and abstract ideas of transnationality, memory, fluidity and community. 

 

The artists share an impetus to understand one’s history and find meaning in connecting to oneself and each other. Common themes that arise from these explorations include journeys and healing. For example, Se Young Au conceives of an offering to children who did not have agency in their leaving of Korea and uses scent to explore grief held in the body. Similarly, Jette Hye Jin Mortensen uses sensory and ancient exercises to transform self harm, anxiety and sorrow into a healing space. Meanwhile, KimSu Theiler uses filmmaking and narrative to interrogate the epistemic foundations of how a person is defined as a member of a community.

 

About the Artists

 

Se Young Au, Inexhaustible Abundance. mixed media, 2022

 

Se Young Au (Los Angeles) is a multi-disciplinary artist who received their BA in photography from Columbia College Chicago. Their work is at the intersection of digital collage, personal archive, installation and olfaction. Au employs vivid, atmospheric imagery and color as they explore themes of survival, possibility and alternative worlds. They have worked within the context of both the commercial and fine art world. Select clients include: Museum of Natural History Los Angeles, Fly By Jing, and Broccoli Magazine. Previous works have been shown at Henry Art Gallery (Seattle) in collaboration with painter Gabriella Sanchez and the El Segundo Museum of Art.

Jette Hye Jin Mortensen (Roskilde) is an artist, writer, curator and sustainability advocate with a background in theater, film and music. She works conceptually with expansions and stagings of identity, collective being, natural science, performative architecture and spirituality. She is MFA graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2010, recipient of the 3-year work stipend from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2015 and certified PDC Permaculture designer in 2018. She has exhibited at the 6th Gwangju Biennale, ARoS Museum of Contemporary Art, Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Kyunghee Museum of Art, 1st Nordic Art Triennial at Eskilstuna Art Museum, GI ´08 Glasgow International, The VM Mountain by Bjarke Ingels, U-Turn Quadrennial for Contemporary Art and done public commissions like HK20 for the Danish Building Agency.

KimSu Theiler (New York) is a visual artist based in New York City. She has exhibited film, video and media installation work internationally including the Rotterdam Film Festival (Netherlands), Gwangju Biennial (Korea), Museum of Modern Art (United States), and the Toronto Film Festival (Canada). She has received grants from New York Foundation for the Arts, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York State Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film Presentation Funds, the John Cage Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art, the Jack Smith Artist Award and the F/VA Artist Mentor Project Grant. Her artist residencies include the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Korea) and The Art Studios at Rådhuset-Oslo (Norway). 

 

 

About The Curator

Katie Yook is a curator with experience organizing exhibitions, events, talks and performances with artists interested in multimedia, research-driven practices. She received an MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London and BA in Contemporary Art from New York University and has held positions at Tate, Archaeology of the Final Decade, Creative Time, Art in General and Suzanne Randolph Fine Arts. She is currently Fundraising and Programs Manager at AHL Foundation. Recent curatorial projects were held at The Yard Theatre, Cody Dock, Lewisham Arthouse, Cubitt Gallery, Arts in Perpetuity Trust, Res. and EnclaveLab. She has contributed writing to Agora Digital Art, this is tomorrow, ICA London and the Goldsmiths MA Digital Culture Degree Show Catalogue. In 2018 she curated Phantom Limb, an exhibition and event series in London centering the practices of Korean diaspora artists.

비영리 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation 대표 이숙녀)이 오는 9월 10일 토요일 해외 입양인 동포 미술 작가 초대 전시 ‘센소리아(Sensoria)‘를 개최한다. 케이티 육이 기획하였으며 오 세영, 예떼 혜진 모텐슨, 김수 테일러의 작품을 선보일 예정이다. 

한국 전쟁 이후 2000년대 중반에 걸쳐 한국에서 해외로 입양된 약 200,000명은 지리적으로는 분산되어있으나 강력한 글로벌 커뮤니티를 유지하고 있다. 전시 ‘Sensoria’는 참여 작가들의 내러티브를 전면에 내세움으로써, 한국인으로서의 정체성과 그 개념을 확장하고 입양의 사회역사적 토대를 조명하고자 한다.

전시 제목 ‘센소리아’는 사람의 세계를 향한 인지 감각을 구성하는 복합적인 자극들의 집합을 의미한다. 작가가   초국적, 기억, 유동성 및 커뮤니티와 같은 복합적이고 추상적인 아이디어를 탐구하기 위하여 어떻게 사운드, 향기, 디지털 기술과 같은 비시각적인 감각을 사용하는지 볼 수 있는 전시이다. 참여 작가들은 한 개인의 역사를 이해하고 나아가 각자 자신과 서로를 연결하는 것의 의미를 찾기 위한 원동력을 공유한다. 전시 작품은 모두 치유와 여행이라는 공통점에서 출발한다. 예를 들면, 작가 오세영은 의지에 반하여 떠나야 했던 어린 아이들의 슬픔을 탐색하고 헌정하기 위하여 향기를 사용한다. 예떼 혜진 모텐센은 감각과 고대의 운동법을 통해 자해, 불안, 슬픔과 같은 감정을 치유의 공간으로 변환 시킨다. 마지막으로 김수 테일러는 영화 제작과 내러티브를 사용하여 한 사람이 커뮤니티의 구성원으로 정의되는 방식의 인식론적인 토대에 관하여 질문한다. 

 

참여 작가 소개

오세영 (Se Young Au)은 Columbia College Chicago에서 사진 전공으로 학사 학위를 받고 로스 앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 다원 예술가이다. 그의 작업은 디지털 콜라주, 개인 아카이브, 설치 및 후각의 교차지점에 있다. 생생한 분위기의 이미지와 색상을 작업에 사용하여 서바이벌, 가능성 및 대안적 세계에 관하여 탐구하고 있다. 로스앤젤레스 자연사 박물관(Museum of Natural History Los Angeles), Fly By Jing 및 Broccoli Magazine 과 협업한 바 있으며  최근에는 회화 작가 Gabriella Sanchez 및 El Segundo 미술관과 협력으로 진행한 시애틀의 Henry Art Gallery 에서의 전시에 참여했다. 

예떼 혜진 모텐센 (Jette Hye Jin Mortensen)은 연극, 영화, 음악을 기반으로 덴마크 로스킬데를 중심으로 활동하는 아티스트이자, 문학가, 큐레이터 그리고 지속가능성 옹호자이다. 그는 개념적인 작업을 전개하고 있으며 정체성, 집단적 존재, 자연 과학, 공연적인 건축물 및 영성의 확장과 무대화가 주된 주에이다. 2010년 덴마크 왕립 미술 아카데미에서 석사학위를 받았으며 2015년 덴마크 예술 재단에서 3년 작업 기금의 수여자로 선정 되었다. 제6회 광주비엔날레, 아로스 현대 미술관(ARoS Museum of Contemporary Art), 오버 가덴 현대미술 연구소 (Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art), 경희 미술관, 에스킬스투나 미술관에서 열린 제1회 노르딕 아트 트리엔날레(1st Nordic Art Triennial at Eskilstuna Art Museum) 등에 참여했다.

김수 테일러 (KimSu Theiler)는 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 비주얼 아티스트이다. 로테르담영화제(네덜란드), 광주비엔날레(한국), 현대미술관(미국), 토론토영화제(캐나다) 등 국제적으로 활발하게 영화, 비디오, 미디어 설치 작품을 출품 해왔다.그는 뉴욕 예술 재단(New York Foundation for the Arts), 로어 맨해튼 문화 위원회(Lower Manhattan Cultural Council,), 뉴욕 주 예술 위원회 전자 미디어 및 영화 프레젠테이션 기금(New York State Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film Presentation Funds), 존케이지 현대 퍼포먼스재단 (John Cage Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art), Jack Smith Artist Award 및 F/VA 아티스트 멘토 프로젝트 그랜트 등 다수의 기관에서 기금을 수상했다. 국립현대미술관(한국)과 노르웨이 Rådhuset-Oslo의 아트 스튜디오 등에서 레지던시에 참여한 바 있다. 

 

기획자 소개 

케이티 육 (Katie Yook)은 멀티미디어, 연구 중심 예술 실천을 주제로 활동하는 예술가들과 함께 다양한 전시와 이벤트를 조직해왔다. 뉴욕 대학교에서 현대 미술로 학사를, 런던 골드스미스 대학교에서 큐레이팅으로 석사 학위를 받았다. Tate, Archeology of the Final Decade, Creative Time, Art in General 및 Suzanne Randolph Fine Arts에서 다양한 직책을 역임했으며 Yard Theatre, Cody Dock, Lewisham Arthouse, Cubitt Gallery, Arts in Perpetuity Trust, Res. 및 EnclaveLab. 등에서 큐레이팅 프로젝트를 진행 했다.
