Met Museum Associate Curator Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun Introduces Upcoming Exhibition on Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquerware

Final Part of the AHL Foundation and Korean Cultural Center New York’s Online Public Lecture Series

 

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting Korean contemporary art, and the Korean Cultural Center New York are excited to announce the third and final part of their collaborative Online Public Lecture Series, featuring Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun, Associate Curator for Korean Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her lecture, titled Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer, will premiere on the Korean Cultural Center New York’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY) Wednesday, December 8th. Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay has a long and rich tradition in the history of Korean art, much of which will be showcased as part of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition “Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer,” which opens December 13th, 2021. The exhibition will showcase The Met’s outstanding collection of Korean lacquerware with nearly 30 examples from the twelfth century to the present, marking the Museum’s first exhibition dedicated solely to Korean lacquerware. As the exhibition’s main curator, Eleanor Sooh-ah Hyun will delve into the illustrious history of lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay and give viewers a sneak peak of the works featured in the Met’s upcoming exhibition. Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun is the Associate Curator for Korean Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She previously served as curator for the Korean Collections at the British Museum from 2015 to 2019. She is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Chicago, writing a dissertation on late imperial Joseon Korean and Qing Chinese art. She received a BA in Art History and MA in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University. In 2013–14, she was a Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is the recipient of numerous other fellowships. This annual public lecture series, conducted in cooperation with the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), is designed to familiarize the general public of the New York Tri-State Area with the visual arts culture of Korea. Launched in 2011, it is one of the AHL Foundation’s longest-running programs and has received support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. 알재단 – 뉴욕한국문화원 대중강연 시리즈 세번째 강연 개최

메트로폴리탄 미술관 큐레이터 엘레노어 현의 한국 나전 칠기 이야기

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)과 뉴욕한국문화원(Korean Cultural Center, 원장 조윤증)은 오는 12월 8일(수)에 엘레노어 현 (Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun) 메트로폴리탄 미술관 한국미술 어소시에이트 큐레이터를 초청하여 뉴욕한국문화원의 공식 유튜브 채널(https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY)을 통해 올해 마지막 대중 강연을 개최한다. 

 이번 강의에서는 12월 13일(월) 메트로폴리탄 미술관(Metropolitan Museum of Art)에서 개관하는 나전칠기 특별전 “Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer”를 담당 큐레이터가 직접 소개 한다. 본 전시는 메트로폴리탄 미술관의 12세기부터 현재까지에 이르는 약 30여점의 유려한 한국 나전칠기 작품 콜렉션을 소개할 예정으로, 메트로폴리탄 미술관으로서는 한국 나전 칠기를 다루는 유일무이한 첫번째 전시이기도 하다. 본 강의를 통해 전시를 미리 탐색해보고, 옻칠과 자개가 어떻게 짝을 이루면서도 각자 특별한 물질성을 지니는 지 다양한 작품을 통해 한국 칠공예의 진면모를 살펴볼 것이다.

연사로 나서는 엘레노어 현은 메트로폴리탄 미술관의 한국 미술부 부 큐레이터이다. 영국박물관 한국미술 큐레이터로 근무(2015-2019) 하였으며 시카고 대학교에서 미술사 박사과정을 밟고 있다. 18세기 한국 및 중국 미술에 관하여 논문을 집필 중이다. 컬럼비아 대학교에서 미술사 학사 및 동아시아 언어 및 문화학으로 석사 학위를 취득했다. 2013-14년에 메트로폴리탄 미술관의 Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow였으며, 그 외 다양한 펠로우쉽을 수상한 바 있다.

뉴욕한국문화원과 알재단의 협력으로 진행되는 대중 강연 시리즈는 미국 현지 대중을 대상으로 깊이 있는 강연 프로그램을 제공하기 위해 기획되었다. 이를 통해 누구나 한국의 시각 예술 문화에 친숙하게 접근 할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고자 한다. 2011년 시작 된 장수 인기 프로그램이며, 뉴욕시 문화국(Department of Cultural Affairs)의 후원을 받고 있기도 하다. 올 해는 사회적 거리두기로 인해 온라인으로 강연을 공개하며 별도의 참가 신청 없이 28일 뉴욕한국문화원 유튜브에 공개 된 후 누구나 청강할 수 있다. 강의 관련 질문이나 문의는 info@ahlfoundation.org 으로 하면 된다.
