Examining similar traditions of Korean contemporary art

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting Korean artists, and the Korean Culture Center New York have produced an online lecture by Jieun Rhee, a professor in Art History at Myongji University that is available to view on the Korean Culture Center New York’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY).
Cultural ambivalence stands at the heart of what can be considered the act of “inventing tradition” in contemporary Asian arts. By inventing tradition, this talk refers to the creative practice of self-fashioning one’s cultural sense of belonging at the local or national level. Particular attention should be paid to the way in which the act of invention plays out against the globalist system of representation in which Asian arts are often essentialized as signs of “Asianness,” an Orientalist construct of otherness that coheres into the world picture that privileges the Occidental gaze. This talk will account for a few examples of Korean contemporary art where local tradition is used creatively to challenge the globalist image of otherness.
Jieun Rhee is a professor in Art History at Myongji University in Seoul, Korea. She was the 2019-2020 Newhouse faculty fellow at Wellesley College and 2018 Visting Scholar at MIT. Dr. Rhee has been widely published on contemporary Asian Arts in various journals such as Art History, Oriental Art, and N. Paradoxa. Her essay is included in Feminism Art Theory: An Anthology 1968-2014 (Wiley-Blackwell, 2015). She is currently writing a book on the interstitial identities in contemporary Asian arts.
The public lecture series, conducted in cooperation with the Korean Cultural Center of New York and the AHL Foundation, was designed to provide in-depth lecture programs to the local public in the United States. Through this, we aim to create an environment in which anyone can familiarize themselves with the visual arts culture of Korea. It is a popular longevity program launched in 2011 and is also sponsored by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. This year, due to social distancing, the lecture is released online, and anyone can listen after the lecture is released on the YouTube of the Korean Cultural Center in New York on the day of the lecture without a separate application. 한국 현대미술의 유사 전통 살펴보기
비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)과 뉴욕한국문화원(Korean Cultural Center, 원장 조윤증)은 오는 11월 18일 명지대학교 미술사학과 이지은 교수를 연사로 초청하여 <교란하는 용들: 한국현대미술의 유사 전통>이라는 주제로 강의를 개최한다. 강연 영상은 뉴욕한국문화원의 공식 유튜브 채널(https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY)에서 확인 할 수 있다.
이수경, 정은영 작가의 작품 이미지와 함께 시작 되는 이번 강연은 동시대 아시아 미술에서 ‘전통을 만들어내는’ 행위의 문화적 양가성에 관하여 심도 있게 살펴본다. 특히, 이러한 전통 만들어 내기는 ‘아시아성’의 발현으로 간주되는 아시아 예술의 전지구적인 재현 시스템에 맞선다는 측면에서 특별한 주목이 필요하다. 서구 중심의 세계관과 오리엔탈리즘의 시선에서 구축된 타자의 이미지에 어떻게 현대미술이 도전하고 있는 지 여러 작품과 역사 사례를 통해 논의 해보는 흥미로운 자리가 될 것이다.
한편 이번 강연을 진행 할 이지은 교수는 보스턴 대학교에서 미술사학 박사를 취득 후 명지대학교 미술사학과에 재직 중이다. 2019년부터 올해까지 웰즐리 컬리지(Wellesley College)의 뉴하우스 인문센터(New House Center for The Humanities)에서 연구교수로 근무 하였으며, 2018년에는 MIT대학에서 방문 학자를 지낸 바 있다. 이 교수는 Art History, Oriental Art, and N. Paradoxa 등 저널에 활발하게 글을 기고하고 있으며 현재는 아시아 현대미술의 간(間)주체성에 관한 책을 집필 중이다.
뉴욕한국문화원과 알재단의 협력으로 진행되는 대중 강연 시리즈는 미국 현지 대중을 대상으로 깊이 있는 강연 프로그램을 제공하기 위해 기획되었다. 이를 통해 누구나 한국의 시각 예술 문화에 친숙하게 접근 할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고자 한다. 2011년 시작 된 장수 인기 프로그램으로 뉴욕시 문화국(Department of Cultural Affairs)의 후원을 받고 있기도 하다. 올 해는 사회적 거리 두기로 인해 온라인으로 강연을 공개하며 별도의 참가 신청 없이 강연 당일 뉴욕한국문화원 유튜브에 공개 된 후 누구나 청강할 수 있다. 강의 관련 질문이나 문의는 info@ahlfoundation.org 으로 하면 된다.
