AHL Forum: Artists Zaun Lee / Christina Ko / Chanhee Choi / June Kim

Artist: Zaun Lee

Lee’s paintings and installations visually explore the might and the frailty of humankind logic.  This logic infuses her visual approach through the basic mechanism of the grid, which she brings to life as a fluid organism.  LEE studied Visual Communication Design at Seoul National University, and received degrees in Philosophy from Alfred University and in Painting from Pratt Institute.  Her recent exhibition venues include New York Foundation for the Arts; Cindy Rucker Gallery, New York; Soomdo Art Space, Seoul; and Lite-Haus Galerie, Berlin.  She currently lives and works between New York City and London.

Artist: Christina Ko

Ko was born in 1990 in Flushing, New York and makes work about the disparities and fissures between her Korean and American heritage. She received her BFA from Cornell University in 2013 and she works primarily in painting, but also incorporates found objects in her work. She has shown her work in Ithaca, NY and in around New York City.

Artist: Chanhee Choi

Choi earned her BFA degree from Dongduk Women’s University in 2013. She received her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies at School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016.Currently, Chanhee is starting her Ph.D. degree in Art and Technology major at DXARTS, the University of Washington in 2017. Her work has been shown at Chicago Expo, School of The Art Institute of Chicago and the Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, as well as at venues in Germany, Korea, and cities throughout the United States. She has held a residency at Auto Center Contemporary Art Space in Berlin. Choi meditates through repetitive and time-consuming processes such as ceramics and embroidery. As her obsessions surrounding the fantastical increased, she delved further into complex contemporary art mediums such as animation, game design, and neon sculptures.

Artist: June Kim

New York-based artist Kim is best known for her performative photographs and videos of herself and her wolf-like dogs. Kim creates scenes which explore female identity, desire, and beauty. The ever-present dogs appear across all types media in ways that are metaphorical as well as diaristic, and provide a portal to the mythic and primal. She is inspired by a wide range of artists such as Roger Ballen, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Nan Goldin, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Her work has been featured on Saatchi Art’s online gallery several times, and in magazines such as BOMB and Crush Fanzine.

 

Guest Critic: Keith Schweitzer (Director/Co-Founder of The Lodge Gallery)

Keith Schweitzer is the Director/Co-Founder of The Lodge Gallery, located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Schweitzer was named as a “Young New York Art Dealer To Watch” by artnet in 2015. He is also Director of Public Art for Fourth Arts Block, the non-profit leadership organization for Manhattan’s officially designated Cultural District in the East Village (Rockefeller Foundation Cultural Innovation Fund Award 2012, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) ArtWorks Award 2013). He was a founding member of No Longer Empty, serving as Director of Exhibitions and Curator from its inception in 2009 through 2011. Working with a focus in New York City for more than 12 years, his high-profile collaborative exhibitions, events and installations frequently combine internationally recognized artists, institutions and organizations with local emerging artists and neighborhood-specific themes.

Guest Critic: Krista Saunders Scenna

Krista Scenna is an independent curator and gallerist based in Brooklyn, NY.  She earned her undergraduate degree in Art History & Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate degree in interdisciplinary contemporary art from New York University’s Draper Program.  Scenna has worked for the ICA in Philadelphia, the Queens Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art and New Museum of Contemporary Art in various capacities.  She was also a 2010-11 Lori Ledis Curatorial Fellow. In addition to exhibitions at BRIC, NURTUREart and Lesley Heller Workspace, her curatorial portfolio includes site-specific exhibitions in alternative forums such The Old Stone House, Vax Moto motorcycle garage, the DUMBO Arts Festival and SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2015-2016.  As the co-owner of Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn, Scenna connects emerging artists with new art buyers.  She is also a proud member of the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD) and serves on the board of Arts Gowanus.
